Le titre parodie les Epistolae clarorum virorum de Reuchlin (1514) dans lesquelles il était question de brûler tous les livres non chrétiens. C'est cet ouvrage qui est à l'origine du terme "obscurantisme" repris par les philosophes des Lumières. L'ouvrage est suivi de deux pièces satiriques en français à l'encontre de Pierre Lizet (1482-1554) dont l'Epistola magistri Benedicti Passavanti attribuée à Théodore de Bèze : ce jurisconsulte intolérant, premier président au Parlement de Paris est en effet à l'origine de la Chambre ardente contre les Protestants.
