In GOOD condition with general darkening to the covers. Some soiling. Heavy chipping and tearing along the extremities, with some loss to the covers. Small black stamp on the upper front cover. Covers splitting along the upper hinges. Text clean and solid with several pages unopened. General darkening throughout. Small notation in pencil next to the first passage of the text.

Dreizehnter Bertholddruck, bibliophil gestalteter Pressendruck. - Besitzstempel auf dem Vorsatz (aus der… Handbibliothek von Ernst Crous). Das starke Büttenpapier unbeschnitten und teils noch nicht aufgeschnitten, breitrandig. - Einband leicht angestaubt, sonst sehr gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - Gegen Ende des 18.Jahrhunderts kam es mit der zunehmenden Verbreitung der bürgerlichen Literatur- und Lesekultur vermehrt zu Versuchen, den in romanischen Ländern bereits etablierten, viel höheren Stellenwert der typographischen Gestaltung von Druckwerken, auch im deutschen Sprachraum zu berücksichtigen. Campe, der bekannte Verleger und pädagogische Autor, machte einen Versuch anhand der Übersetzung des "Einsiedlers von Warkworth" (The Hermit of Warkworth) des anglikanischen Bischofs Thomas Percy. Das kleine Werk, im Zuge der schottisch-gälischen Romantik bereits etliche Male zuvor übersetzt, erschien 1790 unter dem Titel "Der Einsiedler von Wakeworth. Eine Northumberländische Ballade. Von Johann Heinrich Campe. Neue Auflage mit verschiedenen Verbesserungen, und zur Probe einer Druckschrift neuer Art. Braunschweig, in der Schulbuchhandlung 1790. 55 Seiten in Oktav." - Diese Ausgabe, ein kleines Heftchen, mit den verschiedenen Schrifttypen ist heute im Original nahezu unauffindbar. - Der vorliegende Band, selbst bibliophil gestaltet und mit der "Nova-Mediaeval-Fraktur" gedruckt, dokumentiert diesen Versuch u.a. durch einige Druckproben im Reprint (Anhang). - Der Herausgeber dieses Pressedrucks, der Mennonit Ernst Crous (Krefeld 1882-1967), war Kirchenhistoriker und Bibliothekar und arbeitete v.a. in Berlin an der Herausgabe des monumentalen Gesamtkatalogs der Wiegendrucke, bei dessen Erstellung er wohl auf zahlreiche interessante Typographien aus der Frühzeit des Buchdrucks aufmerksam wurde. Er katalogisierte mit seinem Team insgesamt 38.000 Inkunabeln. - Wenig später, um 1800, erweiterte sich die Debatte um die deutsche Typographie und gipfelte im ersten sogenannten Fraktur-Antiqua-Streit. - Schönes Geschenk für Buchwissenschaftler, Sammler, Drucker und Typographen.
