SB. 299pp with 24 illuPublished Price £14.50 Because of his foppish and dandified appearance, emphasised by the cigarette holder he always used, the Crown Prince was regarded by the British during the Great War as a figure of ridicule, known to them as 'Little Willy'. He was born in Potsdam on 6 May 1882, the eldest of Kaiser, and his memoirs begin with his childhood and early years and the development of his relations with his father, a somewhat remote figure though he notes that as time went on he often found himself being approached to use his position to make representations to the Kaiser. He was commissioned into the First Foot Guards and later was given command of a squadron of the Garde du Corps (the elite cavalry regiment) and then, to broaden his military experience, he took command of a battery of the 1st Regiment of Field Artillery and finally he was appointed commanding officer of the Life Guard Hussar Regiment - the Death's Head Hussars. When war came he was given command of the Fifth Army with General Schmidt von Knobelsdorf as his chief of staff, and it was his army that launched the Verdun offensive in February 1916 .As you read on the more it becomes clear trhat he was, in fact, far from his caricature. He was well aware of the enormous prestige attached to his person as son of the All-Highest and he did not hesitate to make use of it, in the political and military scene. He played no small part in the downfall of the Chancellor, von Bethman Hollweg, in 1917. In the aftermath of Ludendorff's resignation he urged the Kaiser not to appoint Groener in his place, a man he regarded as a defeatist whom he disliked and mistrusted. He also maintained that the German army was not defeated at the Marne; it was withdrawn by its leaders. The battle was lost because the High Command gave it up as lost. When Moltke's emissary, Lt Col von Hentsch, doing his rounds of the Army commanders ordering them to fall back, arrived at Fifth Army HQ, the Crown Prince refused point blank to comply without a written authority, which Hentsch did not have. And even when von Moltke himself turned up, "struggling to repress his tears" and demanded the instant withdrawal of Fifth Army, Wilhelm, after a lengthy argument still refused to go until he was ready. Moltke, apparently, left in tears. The imagination boggles at the thought of Haig tearfully imploring Rawlinson to obey orders, and the latter standing there, arms folded and saying:"Shan't!". Typed letter signed to "Mr Dandy",a longstanding English friend, in English. Signed "Frederick Prince of Prussia". Patmore HalI, Little Hadham, Herts, I June 1954. One page, slighly creased but suitable for framing. He responds to Mr Dandy's sympathy and adds: "I spent the last few days with my mother in Germany. Thank God she did not suffer. She passed away quite peacefully. The funeral took place on a lovely, sunny spring day up on the Burg Hohenzollern, where once you met my mother." He has no photographs but will send any he gets. He adds (after all he was a farmer) some words about the prospects for crops. He writes a postscript, thanking him for the "cutting" (presumably newspaper).…

TWO: Half-length portrait, apparently from the same shoot as One, with autograph signature. 8 x 11 cm. Written on reverse: 'HECKINGEN. / SEP. 7. 1951'. Same outfit as One, but with cigarette in right hand. Inscribed around the head: 'James Dandy / Crownprince Wilhelm'. THREE: View of Hechingen Castle. 8.5 x 13 cm. Typed message on reverse, dated 'Hechingen. / im Mai 1951.', 'Herzlichen Dank für das treue Gedenken und die guten Wünsche zu meinem Geburtstag.' Although Wilhelm's birthday was indeed in May, the signature to this note is not his. A fourth item (in good condition, lightly aged) is a card with a printed new year's message from 'Stuttgart-Frauenkopf, January 1954'. An autograph note in English, with the same signature as Item Three, reads: 'With kind thoughts and thanking you for the bulbs'. …

Includes the publisher's white paper dust jacket, in delicate condition, title and printed illustrations. Both hinge flaps detached, chip from front cover, scarce in any condition, with only one other known example to appear at auction. (BAL 7131) (Grolier, 100 American) Housed in a custom beige cloth clamshell, marbled interior, title stamped in gilt on the spine. From a signed limited edition of 250 copies, this being number 109. Signed by the author after the dedication: "Joel Chandler Harris," with an excerpt from the book: "Han' me down my walkin' cane." This copy was a presentation copy from D. Appleton & Company to the 13-year old, German Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm, the last German Crown Prince and Crown Prince of Prussia, before the abolition of the monarchy. The first edition of Uncle Remus was published by D. Appleton in 1881. This New and Revised edition was issued in red buckram as a trade edition. (Provenance: Estate of Actor and Comedian, Arte Johnson, purchased in 2025). This work includes a letter from Freiherr von Lyncker, the Baron von Lyncker (Lieutenant Colonel and First Military Governor), regretting that the gifts for the Crown Prince cannot be accepted, and the book must be returned. Here is a full translation of the letter: "Plön in Holstein, 27 August 1896 / Dear Mrs. Franklin, I am honored to write to you in response to your letter of the 24th of this month addressed to General von Deines, and to express my sincere gratitude for sending the Uncle Remus book. At the same time, I have to inform you that gifts to His Imperial and Royal Highness the Crown Prince are not accepted as a matter of principle. I therefore regret to inform you that I am obliged to return this lovely book. / Yours sincerely, Freiherr von Lyncker / Oberstleutnant and Erster Militär-Gouverneur.".
