From the introduction: "This is a book about books; to wit, the series of Christmas keepsakes produced by the University Printer at Cambridge between 1930 and 1973 'for his friends in printing and publishing'. They had their origin in that sensational period when a few people were rediscovering the delights of good printing, and celebrating their discovery in books which they themselves conceived, organised and often wrote. Stanley Morison was particularly given to this form of self-indulgence, and Walter Lewis made an enthusiastic ally; the nine Christmas books produced in his time as Printer were engaging ventures in the genre. There was a lull during the war years but in 1947, under Lewis's successor, the practice was resumed. Since then there have been two interruptions, the first in 1959 when a printers' strike in the summer had left too many arrears of customers' work, the second in 1963, the year when a move was made into new buildings. In the gap of 1959 a modest pamphlet had to serve, in which were listed the books produced up till then, with some notes on their contents and presentation. His close association with Lewis, and with Stanley Morison, Oliver Simon, Francis Meynell, Eric Gill, Bruce Rogers and others, enables him to write authentically - and entertainingly - about their working methods and their personalities. Artists come into his story too, among them Gwen Raverat, Reynolds Stone and Edward Ardizzone. After the war, during which he served in the Admiralty, Brooke Crutchley succeeded Lewis as University Printer and in the following years he was absorbed in a search for increased productivity, the building of a new printing house, introducing up-to-date technologies and sparring with printing trade unions.
