Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: No Jacket, as Issued. Second Edition. Second edition, published in the same year as the first edition - 1891. Illustrated with three plans and four monochrome portrait photographs, including the frontispiece - each photo with an undamaged tissue-guard. ***All plates and plans collated as present, but please note that one of the gatherings pp.241-256 has been misbound and appears between pp.224-5 - no pages are missing however (please see scans). ***A very good example in brick-red cloth-covered boards, with gilt titles to the spine and front board, with gilt device also to the front board. The gilt is slightly dulled on the spine but still quite bright on the front board. The boards show some marks and rubbing commensurate with age and handling over the last 135 years, but are generally clean, with no significant faults. The spine is slightly faded. The edges and the corner tips of the boards are slightly rubbed. Head and tail of spine slightly frayed and rubbed. No reading lean to the binding, but please note that the front and rear hinges of the spine at the gutter are a bit weak with slight splitting to the endpapers, but still holding firm. Page block edges clean. Internally also very good with no foxing to the pages. Pages clean. No creases or tears. With a previous owner's name - Chas Wheeler - on the front free endpaper (possibly Charles Wheeler, journalist and broadcaster - 'Having declined an offer to become the programme's editor, he was later assigned to New Delhi (where he reported extensively on the 1959 Tibetan uprising.' (Wiki) - and an attractive bookplate - Ex Libris H. J. Figg Edgington 'Audeo' on the front pastedown. Please note that there is some weakness to some of the gutters between gatherings, but no actual splitting, and the binding is holding firm. The paper stock used is of a high quality and makes the page block quite heavy for the binding - hence the areas of weakness. A very nicely produced late-Victorian book. ***207mm x 140mm. xvi prelim-pages including Preface and List of Illustrations plus 421 pages including an Index at the back of the book plus an advertisement. ***Contents include the following subjects: The Conspirators, The siege and storming of Delhi, The storming of Lakhnao, Western and Central India, The last embers of the revolt etc. ***'In writing this short History of the Indian Mutiny of 1857 I have aimed at the compilation of a work which, complete in itself, should narrate the causes as well as the consequences of a movement unforeseen, undreamt of, sudden and swift in its action, and which taxed to the utmost the energies of the British people. Preceding writers on the same subject, whilst dealing very amply with the consequences, have, with one exception, but dimly shadowed forth the causes. The very actors in the Mutiny failed to detect them. (Quote taken from the author's Preface) ***'The Indian Rebellion of 1857 was a major uprising in India in 1857-58 against the rule of the British East India Company, which functioned as a sovereign power on behalf of the British Crown. The rebellion began on 10 May 1857 in the form of a mutiny of sepoys of the company's army in the garrison town of Meerut, 40 miles northeast of Delhi. It then erupted into other mutinies and civilian rebellions chiefly in the upper Gangetic plain and central India. The rebellion posed a military threat to British power in that region, and was contained only with the rebels' defeat in Gwalior on 20 June 1858.' (Wiki) ***A very nice example of the second edition of this important work, which was published when the Indian Mutiny was still an event in fairly recent living memory. Of interest to military historians, and those interested in the Colonial history of India. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
