Single page, c. 185 × 115 mm, written in ink on pale cream wove paper, folded, with light age-toning and minor handling, otherwise in very good condition. The letter reads in full: 'Dear Mr Rogers, Pray have the kindness to let my friend Mr Cubitt see your precious house and lovely pictures. (He is the great Architect of modern times.) Believe me sincerely and faithfully yours, Edwin Landseer' A personal note of introduction from Sir Edwin Landseer, at the height of his fame and in the year of his knighthood, to the poet and collector Samuel Rogers, whose house in St James's Place was renowned as one of the most admired private galleries and literary salons in London. The 'Mr Cubitt' commended to Rogers is Sir William Cubitt, the leading civil engineer and architect of the period, later President of the Institution of Civil Engineers and responsible for major public works and royal commissions. With envelope, addressed by Cubitt to 'C F Stuart Esqre | 20 New Norfolk Street | Park Lane', with red wax seal and postmarks, and docketted 'Mr Cubitt. Engineer'. He has received Stuart's letter of 17 May, and has 'since seen Mr. Buchanan with all the Reports Plans Instr[ucti]ons &c &c relative to the question of interference with Lord Blantyre's property', and he will 'more fully examine' them 'during the recess of Parliament'. He has 'also seen & consulted with Mr. Spottiswoode on the subject', and has 'little doubt but that some proposition & plan may be devised as will meet the case, without either promoting the improvement of the Navigation or injuriously interfering with the rights & enjoyments of Lord Blantyre as regards the River Clyde -'. He concludes 'with the assurance that the subject shall have my best attention'.…

Begins: 'In working out the details of the roof, we find certain modification of the construction desirable which with your permission, the bearer Mr. Nicholson will submit for your approval.' He believes his firm has succeeded in making 'such arrangements as will ensure all the materials being delivered in good time', and they are 'endeavouring to do the same with respect to labour'. …

Library stamps of Palais de la Paix, La Hay, on title page. A report on the work in progress since 1853 and further remedial work required on the decaying eastern Pier and Pier Head of Ramsgate Harbour. Appendix B is a fine lithograph of the existing pier and the work so far carried out. Two further appendices, C and D, set out the costs of wages and material expended 1850-55. Sir William Cubitt (1785-1861), civil engineer, began his career as a millwright in Norfolk and, as chief engineer to the South Eastern Railway, was responsible for constructing the difficult stretch along the foot of the cliffs between Folkestone and Dover. The construction of Ramsgate Harbour began in 1749, under an act of Parliament, following the destruction of the previous harbour in the storm of 1748. MANUSCRIPT LETTER. 8 x 12.75 inches. One leaf and address on fold. Now folded in two but indications of old folds as letter with slight darkening of address fold. Red was seal with initial with corresponding tear in paper where seal opened. In good condition. A letter signed W. Cubitt to the Ipswich justices reporting on the satisfactory condition of Buffits Bridge which Cubitt has inspected on their behalf. Mr Fuller of Woodbridge was employed for the sum of £198. 5s. 6d. to secure the 'Sluice, Fordway and Foundations' of the bridge, work which will preserve the bridge and sluice and 'a good hard roadway thro the Ford.' Cubitt considers the the work carried out fully answers its intended purpose, 'having stood the floods of the last Winter.' Fuller the contractor has also agreed to maintain the structure for a period of fourteen years and should therefore receive his payment due. William Cubitt (1785-1861), born in Norfolk, worked as a millwright and agricultural implement maker and then as chief engineer for Ransomes of Ipswich, c.1812-17. He had acted as a civil engineer since 1814 and in 1826 moved to London where he became engaged in river, canal and later railway projects, constructing the South Eastern railway to Folkestone and Dover, 1843-44. This letter is dated from its watermark of 1820, soon after the beginning of Cubitt's career in Ipswich as a civil engineer, when he was still working on road bridges.
