It has been publ…ished continuously since its first issue in 1888, nine months after the Society itself was founded. It primarily contains articles about geography, history, and world culture. The magazine is known for its extensive use of dramatic photographs. The magazine is published monthly, and additional map supplements are also included with subscriptions. On occasion, special editions of the magazine are issued. The first issue of National Geographic Magazine was published on September 22, 1888, nine months after the Society was founded. Starting with its January 1905 publication of several full-page pictures of Tibet in 1900-1901, the magazine changed from being a text-oriented publication closer to a scientific journal to featuring extensive pictorial content, and became well known for this style. John Hyde was the first editor.This issue includes: An American Girl Cycles Across Romania by Dorothy Hosmer with 31 Illustrations and Map; The Panther of the Hearth by Frederick B. Robert Foran with 23 Illustrations and Map.Dorothy Hosmer had quit her job as a secretary, paid $89 for a third-class steamer ticket, and set off for a trip around the world. In 1937 Hosmer wrote the editors of the National Geographic Magazine from Florence-she was 26 years old at the time-and asked if they would be interested in publishing an "account of her trip with illustrative photographs." They were interested, and the account of her trip was published in 1938 with the breathless title: "An American Girl Cycles Across Romania.Frederick B. Eddy was formerly President of the Siamese Cat Society of America and Empire Cat Club of New York. Willard R. Culver was a noted National Geographic photographer.Hugh Bamford Cott, (6 July 1900 - 18 April 1987), was a British zoologist, an authority on both natural and military camouflage, and a scientific illustrator and photographer. In 1938 he was made a Doctor of Science at Glasgow, and he became a Zoology lecturer at Cambridge University and Strickland Curator of Birds at the university's Museum of Zoology. During the Second World War, Cott worked as a camouflage expert for the British Army and helped to influence War Office policy on camouflage. His book Adaptive Coloration in Animals (1940), popular among serving soldiers, was the major textbook on camouflage in zoology of the twentieth century. After the war, he became a Fellow of Selwyn College, Cambridge. As a Fellow of the Zoological Society of London, he undertook expeditions to Africa and the Amazon to collect specimens, mainly reptiles and amphibians.Foran trained at Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and achieved the rank of Major during the Second Boer War. Foran was recruited by the British East Africa Police, becoming one of its six original officers. Foran distinguished himself as a big game hunter and wrote numerous articles and books based on his adventures, including Kill or Be Killed: The Rambling Reminiscences of an Amateur Hunter, published in 1933. Foran worked as a travel writer for the National Geographic Society and wrote Malayan Symphony: Being The Impressions Gathered During A Six months' Journey Through The Straits Settlements, Federated Malay States, Siam, Sumatra, Java And Bali about his 1935 trip through Southeast Asia.
