Originally published in Latin in 1840, the text documented the Great Plague of Milan, which almost halved the population of the city and cost the lives of tens of thousands more people in Northern Italy. Alessandro Manzoni used this account to describe in detail the effects of the plague in his masterpiece, The Betrothed. "Amalia Nizzoli's work was not primarily to discuss the relationship between Christianity and Islam, though it does include relevant material and some critical remarks. She was among the first women to describe a journey to the Nile valley (together with Sarah Belzoni and Wolfradine von Minutoli).
