Such ephemeral material is often discarded and is increasingly uncommon. Its presence adds contextual and institutional provenance value. Cutler (1915-2006) was a distinguished American diplomat who served in the U.S. Foreign Service for more than three decades. A graduate of Wesleyan University and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, he entered the Foreign Service in 1940 and held a range of posts in the Near East and South Asia. Cutler served as U.S. Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia twice (1965-1969 and 1975-1978), and later as Ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Iran from 1979-1980 during the period of the Iranian hostage crisis. After retiring from government service, Cutler became President of the Meridian International Center in Washington, D.C., where he played a significant role in advancing international cultural and diplomatic exchange programs. A beautifully produced book produced by India House, a prestigious private club founded in 1914 at 1 Hanover Square in Lower Manhattan that closed for good during Covid. Its art collection gave the club the patina of having been a very old institution with roots in the China trade, but in fact it was founded in 1914, albeit in the former Hanover Bank Building which opened in 1854. 4to. 33 by 27 cm. xxxiv, [2], 137, [2] pp. 35 plates, independent of pagination, and also not including blanks at end. One plate folding, and eleven of the plates are color plates, including the folding plate. Most of the artwork is of ships, but also a few portrait and architectural and panorama plates -- a panoramic view of the harbor in Canton, and a portrait of Houqua, a prominent Hong merchant. A few white lines or scuffs on front and rear cover, possibly entirely cleanable. Even with this minor issue, a very beautiful copy.…
