Entstanden ist die Novelle 1905 (vgl. Kreutzer, Alfred Döblin S.175, Anm. 4). Kurt Pinthus, einer der Wortführer des literarischen Expressionismus schrieb in der "Zeitschrift für Bücherfreunde", diese Novellensammlung bilde "die Umwandlung von Impressionismus zum Expressionismus." "Von besonderem Interesse ist das Titelblatt, welches Bild und geschnittene Schrift zu der für Kirchner bezeichnenden Einheit zusammenführt, Vorbild für Späteres. (.) Der Holzschnitt, 'die graphischste aller graphischen Techniken', zeigt sich in den Blättern zu Döblins Novelle noch ganz streng, Flächen- und Konturenschnitt werden zusammengebracht, reiche Binnenelemente, die später für Kirchner typisch werden, gibt es noch nicht."
