Engraved portrait, oval with surrounding legend and text beneath, on laid paper (6 7/8 x 4 1/4 inches). Cut to just within platemark and inlaid into later wove paper sheet. Later ink inscription on verso reading "from Holland / 1809." Minor wear and soiling. Very good. A very early engraved portrait of Sir Francis Drake. A clean impression of the second state of this famous portrait of Sir Francis Drake at age forty-three, shortly after he returned from circumnavigating the globe, the basis for most of the later images of him. The image is taken from a portrait purportedly painted from life by Jean Rabel the Elder and is said to be a credible likeness of the famed navigator. The legend beneath the portrait indicates the dates of Drake's circumnavigation, listing Rabel as the painter and Thomas de Leu as the engraver. Thomas de Leu (1560-1612), a pupil of Rabel's, moved to Paris around 1576 and became one of the most noted portrait engravers of his time. This engraving of Drake was the basis for many later images of him, including the well-known engravings by Jodocus Hondius and Crispin van de Passe. The earliest graphic image of one of the greatest figures in maritime history. Marianne Grivel, "Au Sieur Rabel, Parangon du la 'pourtraicture'." in H. Zerner and M. Bayard's RENAISSANCE EN FRANCE (Paris, 2009), pp. 227-92 (2d state).

Aggiungi al carrelloCondizione: Buono (Good). PHILIPP II'S TITLES AND HIS EUROPEAN AND OVERSEAS TERRITORIES 4to (209x150 mm). 120, [4] leaves. Collation: A-Z4 AA-HH4. With the printer's device on the title page and the woodcut coats-of-arms of Philipp II for each one of his many titles. Later stiff vellum vellum, manuscript title on spine. Marginal foxing and staining, but a good copy. First edition. ?Giacomo Mainoldi Gallarati, a member of a patrician family of Cremona, had a distinguished career as a jurist and office-holder in the Milanese dominion of Philip II, and at the end of his life was president of the senate of Milan. He was the author of De titulis Philippi Austrii liber, a survey of the medieval history of the imperial title and the modern domains of his sovereign. It was published in 1573 in Bologna, where Mainoldi was a student and where he resided in the home of Carlo Sigonio [?] Sigonio mentions both father [Giovanni Battista] and son amongst those to whom thanks were due for the assistance in the preparation of De regno Italiae (1576). De titulis Philippi Austrii bears a certain resemblance in both the nature of contents and their organization to the anonymous Historiae tractatus composed circa 1570 by a student and boarder of Sigonio, the identification of whom with Giacomo Mainoldi Gallarati is here offered as a possibility? (W. McCuaig, Carlo Sigonio: the Changing World of the Late Renaissance, Princeton, NJ, 1989, p. 69; see also G.C. Ruginelli, Tractatus de senatoribus, Milan, 1697, pp. 37-38). At leaf 84 begins the chronological table with the succession of all the titles associated to the crown of Spain up to Philipp II. Leaves 26v-37v are dedicated to the discovery and conquest of the overseas territories (Peru, Nicaragua, Panama, Moluccas Islands, etc.) carried on by Columbus, Pizarro, Cortés, and Magellan from 1492 to 1541. Aggiungi al carrelloS.l. (Paris) ; s.d. ( after 1602 -before 1612), format oblong in-4°, print size 138 x 180 mm. Paper size 190 x 285 mm. The suite consists of an engraved title + engraved frontispiece + 24 plates (numbered 2 - 25). Bound in modern imitation leather. Some plates with faint waterstains or dust soiling; title page with some minor and marginal soiling. On the whole a good quality copy with large margins. The title page (without date or place of imprint) depicts Saint Francis within an architectural border. On either side of the portrait are two engraved dedications to the widowed princesse Marie de Luxembourg, duchess of Pentheure. Her husband Philip Emanuel de Lorraine died in 1602; therefore the printing date after 1602. The frontispice gives another portrait of St. Francis surrounded by the smaller portraits of the four virtues. All the plates are signed ''Thomas de Leu ex.''. The plates numbered 2 ->25 have a bi-lingual caption (Latin and French) which explains or comments the depicted scene. Some of the plates depict miracles performed by St. Francis. At the end is bound in a similar plate which obviously does not belong to the suite. Thomas de leu was born in Oudenaarde ( actual Flanders, Belgium) and learned engraving in Antwerp. Around 1578 he moved to Paris. The style of the engravings show clearly the Antwerp influence from designers and engravers such as Stradanus, Maarten De Vos etc. This suite is apparently quite rare. OCLC lists only four copies : Nat. Libr. of Schotland and University of Barcelona library, Münster and BN Paris.
