In December 1643, Colonel Nathanael Fiennes stood trial before a Council of War at St Albans, accused of cowardice for his controversial surrender of Bristol to Royalist forces earlier that summer. As Governor of the city, Fiennes had faced Prince Rupert's assault with limited resources, and though the defence was spirited, the capitulation came swiftly, too swiftly, in the eyes of many Parliamentarians. The loss of Bristol, a vital port and strategic stronghold, sent shockwaves through Parliament, prompting fierce criticism from William Prynn and Clement Walker, both of whom saw the surrender as emblematic of deeper failings within the Independent faction. Prynn and Walker spearheaded the campaign against Fiennes, publishing scathing pamphlets and pressing for formal accountability. Their efforts culminated in a trial that blended military justice with political theatre. Fiennes was found guilty and sentenced to death, though the sentence was never carried out. He would later be exonerated and return to public life under Cromwell's Protectorate. The episode remains a vivid illustration of how battlefield decisions could become lightning rods for ideological conflict, with pamphleteers like Prynn and Walker shaping public perception as much as any court martial. 66 pages, printed in double columns. 'The following narrative of local history has been prompted by the recent discovery at Houghton-Green, near Warrington, of a number of original transcripts, so closely connected with the military transactions in this part of our county, during the Civil War between Charles the First and his Parliament, as to come peculiarly under the province of this Society for notice.' The first plate is 'a representation of the house at Houghton Green. Theh letter (A) shews the situation of the cavity in which the documents were found.' He probably died in Haarlem some time after the publication of his second book, though his death is not recorded.…

Publisher's binding? of 18th-century French olive morocco, triple gilt fillet on sides, flat spine gold-tooled and -lettered, gilt edges (joints and extremities scuffed, spine a trifle faded).*** Counterfeit edition of a meditation on suicide by one of the founders of Jansenism. Reputedly inspired by musings of Henri IV, reported to the author by a friend at court, this work is an apology for the morality of suicide under special circumstances, namely to save the life of one's sovereign. Du Vergier's arguments include over 30 examples of justifiable suicide. Considered by most a youthful jeu d'esprit, for the Jesuits the essay was pure casuistry and a "horror." This counterfeit edition, deliberately intended to deceive, repeats the foliation errors of the original edition and contains the Privilege du Roy; but it is embellished with a title woodcut which distinguishes it easily from the first edition (which instead bears Du Bray's device, a hand holding a sheaf of grain), and is printed on mid-eighteenth-century Limousin paper (carr? raisin fin). The counterfeit may have been published by the Jesuits as ammunition against Duvergier de Hauranne (cf. F. Martin, Ang?lique Arnauld abbess of Port Royal, 1873, pp. 185-6). Of the dozen N. American libraries holding this title, all except Houghton (which holds a copy of the true first edition) take the imprint at its face value. The binding may be a "publisher's binding" (the publisher being of course anonymous): I have seen another privately owned copy of the book in a nearly identical binding.
