In 1663, several professionals from the London book trade, printer John Twyn, bookseller Thomas Brewster, printer Simon Dover, and bookbinder Nathan Brooks were prosecuted at the Old Bailey for their roles in printing and distributing seditious material. Twyn, a printer, was charged with high treason for producing a pamphlet that called for armed resistance against tyranny, a direct challenge to the restored monarchy. The others, Brewster, a bookseller; Dover, a fellow printer; and Brooks, a bookbinder, were tried for misdemeanours linked to the dissemination of the same text. Twyn's trial was grimly decisive: he was found guilty and executed, his case serving as a stark warning to the print trade about the dangers of political dissent. The proceedings underscored the Restoration government's determination to suppress radical voices and reassert control over the press. 26 pages, printed in double columns. Printed between 1809 and 1826, these historic documents are vivid extracts from Cobbett's State Trials; pages from the courtroom record that preserve the voices, arguments, and verdicts which helped shape the course of British justice and still echo through its constitutional legacy. Over two centuries old, each leaf is a tangible fragment of legal history, compelling, original, and rarely encountered outside institutional collections. These are not reprints or replicas, but authentic 19th-century printings that are rich in drama, and steeped in history. This particular trial report has been removed from a volume of Cobbett's State Trials and is now preserved in a modern card cover for practicality - an unassuming but serviceable presentation that favours function over finery. Aggiungi al carrelloBooklet - Unbound Pages. Condizione: Very Good. 17 pages. Extracted from the monumental Complete Collection of State Trials , a cornerstone of British legal and political history, this report documents proceedings involving treason, sedition, and other pivotal offences. Originally compiled to serve both as a legal reference and a vehicle of political discourse, the series shaped contemporary and subsequent understanding of justice, authority, and dissent. The generously sized sheets on which these trials are printed offer particular pleasure to the eye and hand, bearing clear signs of their handmade origin: chain lines and wire impressions from the mould are readily visible, several pages display watermarks, and the paper varies subtly in thickness, all characteristic of 18th century rag paper. Quarto. Full black cloth with titling silver to spine. xx (textual notes), 11ff., xlvi, pp., 1f., 215, [i] pp., 1f. (Registro), 6ff. (index). In dustjacket. With facsimile portraits of composers Cristóbal de Morales, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, Francesco Soto da Langa, Giovanni Marino Nanino, Felice Anerio, Ruggiero Giovannelli, Girolamo Rosini Perugino, Gregorio Allegri, Mario Savioni, Antimo Liberati da Foligno, and Matteo Simonelli; full-page illustrations of both the author and of Cardinal Ottoboni by Trevisiani; and a detailed engraving of the interior of the Sistine Chapel by Filip Innara. A noted Italian castrato, writer and composer of Venetian origin, Adami da Bolensa served as musician-in residence to the most influential music patron of the day, Cardinal Pietro Ottobon, from 1686-1740. He became a member of the Arcadia in 1690 (alongside such notables as Alessandro Scarlatti and Corelli), was admitted as a soprano to the Cappella Sistina in 1689, and held the office of maestro di cappella there from 1701 to 1714. "Adami's importance rests on his Osservazioni per ben regolare il coro de i cantori della Cappella pontificia (Rome, 1711). This treatise is important for its history of the papal musical institution, its chronology of the singers and its numerous biographies of leading singers and composers associated with the Vatican establishment such as Palestrina, Gregorio Allegri and G.M. Nanino. It is also valuable for its catalogue of the repertory performed, often accompanied by Adami's observations of musical and aesthetic interest (particularly in connection with the ubiquitous presence of works by Palestrina)." Owen Jander and Giancarlo Rostirolla in Grove Music Online An important account of Renaissance and Baroque composers closely associated with the papal choir of the Sistine Chapel.

From its origins as a burgh of barony, evolving into a burgh of regality under episcopal control, the author traces Glasgow's struggle to become a royal burgh with full autonomy over its own governance. The book provides a detailed account of the complex political and ecclesiastical landscape of the time, highlighting the rivalry between the city and its ecclesiastical overlords. It examines the interplay between royal authority, aristocratic influence, and popular aspirations, shedding light on the gradual shift towards self-governance and the shaping of Glasgow's unique identity as a major urban centre.

Two volumes in one, 8vo, (155 x 90 mm), pp. xii, 256,157-168 (ie 268); viii, 211, B4 and B5 partly loose at the gutter, The second edition in French of A discourse of free-thinking, occasion?d by the rise and growth of a sect call?d Free-Thinkers, London 1713, by Anthony Collins, philosopher and thinker, friend and pupil of John Locke and one of the most influential deists of his time. This translation, by Rousset de Missy and Scheurleer, was first published in 1714 and includes the Lettre d?un médecin arabe à un fameux Professseur de l?Université de Hall en Saxe, sur les reproches à fait à Mahomet. traduit à l?arabe, 1713, appended to the 1714 edition printed in the Hague. Also included in this edition is the critical reaction to Collins? work by Jean-Pierre de Crousaz, Examen du Traité de la liberté de penser, which was first published in Amsterdam in 1718. At the core of Collins? argument is his defence of free-thinking as a natural right and a religious duty, for which he used as evidence the many disagreements between the clergy. It was largely this that laid him open to accusations of atheism and using freethinking as a platform for a dangerous self-serving and libertine agenda. The work was publicly burnt in England and provoked dozens of replies including those from Jonathan Swift, Benjamin Hoadly, George Berkeley and Richard Bentley. Collins was forced to leave England for the Netherlands until the controversy died down. See Cioranescu 57557 & 21911; Quérard II, 253.

Engraved frontispiece additional title by I.B. Scotin, 28 engraved plates and maps (12 folding), including a double-sided plate of music. Contemporary calf, spines gilt with raised bands, marbled endpapers Provenance: Comte François Potocki (armorial bookplate) Rare first edition of an important illustrated contemporary history of the Indigenous nations in Canada and their relations with the French, including among the earliest printed views in Canada. Claude-Charles Le Roy de la Potherie, also called Bacqueville de la Potherie, arrived in New France in 1698 as comptroller of the Marine and of the fortifications in Canada. His work, published some twenty years before Charlevoix's great history, provides an eyewitness account and historical record of the region. "Bacquevilles account is in the form of letters, one of them describing the Cartier expedition and summarizing the next century and a half, but the history is mostly of the administrations of Frontenac, De la Barre, and Denonville, and as such is a contemporary account of that great period. The work contains much on the relations of New France with the English colonies and with the Indians" (Streeter). The first volume includes a detailed account of the capture of Fort Nelson. "His letters on the governments of Quebec, Trois-Rivieres, and Montreal offer a fairly complete picture of Canada. The descriptions of places and of the settlers way of life, the notes on individuals, the statistics on population and sources of revenue show that nothing escaped La Potheries attention and that he wanted his readers to be well informed" (Canadian National Biography). The second volume is devoted to descriptions of the principal Indian nations and their relations with the French. The author relied on information from Louis Jolliet, the Jesuit missionaries, and from Nicolas Perrot, and includes information provided to him verbally and not found in other accounts. The remaining two volumes are devoted the Iroquois wars and of the peace discussions which led to the general treaty of 1701, including extracts from the speeches to the chiefs of the various nations. Among the illustrations are a prospect of Quebec, a view of the taking of Fort Nelson, images of fur traders and Indigenous peoples, and three folding engraved maps of Hudson Bay, Montreal and La Nouvelle France. Although described by Sabin as "the earliest views taken in Canada" they are preceded by those of Champlain and Lahontan. Nevertheless, the engravings provide the best, and arguably most accurate, iconography of the customs and costume of early Indigenous culture in Canada. As noted by TPL and OCLC, although volume one contains a gap in pagination between pages 10 and 15, the text is continuous and was issued with at least one cancelled leaf between; the gap in pagination, without the cancelled printer's error, as is found in most extant examples.
