Condizione: Very Good. A. and C. Kinloch prosecuted for their involvement in the Jacobite rebellion. 11 pages, printed in double columns. Printed between 1809 and 1826, these historic documents are vivid extracts from Cobbett's State Trials; pages from the courtroom record that preserve the voices, arguments, and verdicts which helped shape the course of British justice and still echo through its constitutional legacy. Over two centuries old, each leaf is a tangible fragment of legal history, compelling, original, and rarely encountered outside institutional collections. These are not reprints or replicas, but authentic 19th-century printings that are rich in drama, and steeped in history. This particular trial report has been removed from a volume of Cobbett's State Trials and is now preserved in a modern card cover for practicality - an unassuming but serviceable presentation that favours function over finery. Size: 15 x 25 cms. Category: State Trials; State Trials::Octavo; Cosmo Books : 29 years on ABE, 47 years taking care of customers. A bookseller you can rely on. Softcover (Booklet - Unbound Pages).

soft cover. Condizione: fine. first edition.

From the first and only edition. in contemporary polished calf, blind border to covers, spine gilt in compartments and lettered in gilt, extremities worn, marbled endpapers, edges gilt, with the contemporary ownership inscription of Boissonade on the section page, early acquisition or shelf mark notes on the front endpaper and bibliographical notes on the initial blank, ?par de Flins, vers 1784 (Barbier). 16mo (133 x 76 mm), pp. [ii] section title, 23-106, A slim pocket volume containing a course of education prepared for the dauphin and originally published as a part of the Almanach Dauphin avec un plan d'un cours nouveau de littérature françoise, à l'usage de ce prince, 1784, by Poullin de Fleins, a Royal councillor who worked as an examiner of accounts. The Almanach Dauphin is very scarce, being known in a single copy at the BN, and we have not compared the texts, but it seems probable that this volume comprises the text removed from the almanac. Poullin de Fleins? curriculum is divided into the three sections: the first concerned with details that are common to all genres, equally prose and verse; the second section looking into details that distinguish poetry from oratory and other genres and the third section treating of each genre in a separate article. The first section is divided into ?des figures, des pensées & des Images? and it is recommended that the most time possible is spent on this section, because it is amusing, the pupil will not be required to concentrate too hard and the teacher will be able to supply a large variety of examples. The second part is divided into six lessons: what distinguishes Poetry from Eloquence; Expression, Style; Interest; Customs and Fables (the last two chapters are specified but have no content or advice). The shorter third part gives an introductory section on the different genres and has a dedicated section on Criticism. The volume concludes with ?Hymnes de Callimaque?, comprising three extended prose accolades to Jupiter, Apollo and Delos. See Cioranescu 51189 (Almanach Dauphin); see Grand-Cartaret 757. OCLC lists Almanach Dauphin, 1784, at BN only.

8vo. iv, 130, [2], (131)-151, [1] pp. 1 folding plate (showing a pyramid, "Hieroglyphe pyramidal"). Early marbled boards ; shelf worn. Complete. Very good. First edition. New research on the origin and destruction of the pyramids of Egypt, followed by a Dissertation on the end of the terrestrial globe. De Vismes, a writer and musicographer, was appointed administrator of the Royal Academy of Music in 1778. He also wrote an astonishing treatise entitled New researches on the origin and destination of the pyramids of Egypt which anticipates remarkably on the current debates of the Anglo-Saxon Christians as to the role attributed to the Nephilim in the construction Egyptian megaliths. See: Patrick Heron, "Prophecy-Nephilim." / A disciple of the famous occultist Count Alessandro di Cagliostro, Devisme du Valgay was also a passionate occultist, which he employed while writing his Nouvelles recherches sur l'origine et la destination des pyramides d'Egypte, in which he endeavored to demonstrate that the pyramids "contain the elementary principles of the abstract and occult sciences, as well as those of the arts that are useful to society." / The author is the herald of a thesis as audacious as extravagant, asserting stubbornly that the pyramids date from an antediluvian time and could not have been built by men but by immaterial beings: "Some have seen in these enormous masses only the work of man; others have believed to recognize in them the work of nature; and the author of the present Memoir believes to find in them the traces of supernatural beings. His arguments are drawn from Holy Scripture and from various ancient authors." Devisme du Valgay is convinced that "these pyramids could never have been, as many historians have thought, monuments of pomp and pride devoted to the burial of the kings of Egypt." / "One must look," he continues, "at the pyramids found near Cairo, their number and relative disposition as the greatest hieroglyph of the universe; it is the emblem of the general theorem of the laws of nature, and genius such as it is, man or demon, must be considered as having penetrated the secrets of the eternal, and the laws which he used to order the organization of the universe." / At the end of the book, we find an essay by the author on the inevitable end of the globe, arguing that "all material substance is subject to decay." He bases his discourse on the calculations of astronomers, among them Tycho Brahe and Kepler, as well as on the prophecies of the Bible confirmed by the Fathers of the Church. / The splendid Leon Gruel Library copy sold at Sotheby brought 17,640 Euros. 22 September 2021.
