Small 8vo, bound in fours and eights, approximately 155 x 90 m, 6 x 3½ inches, head- and tailpieces, small decorated initials, 6 engraved plates, 4 folding, pages: [8], 1-227, [10] - Table and Privilege du Roy, bound in half modern calf over marbled boards, gilt lettered label and gilt rules and decoration to spine, new endpapers, pictorial bookplate to blank endpaper of L.L.D.DEUZEL. Slight rubbing to upper hinge, tiny rust hole to page 183 with loss to 1 letter on verso, ink library stamp to titile page, 2 folding plates have small closed tears repaired on blank side, no loss to image, 1 folding plate slightly dusty, page 146 wrongly numbered 142, occasional small brown spot, pale age toning throughout. A very good copy. First edition of this work on cocoa and sugar. It is said to have been composed by a certain D. Quélus or de Chélus, and corrected by Nicolas Mahudel, according to Barbier. The first part is devoted to the description of the cocoa tree, plantation and cultivation in general, the properties of the seed, it "promptly repairs dissipated spirits, and exhausted strength", cocoa is "very suitable for preserving the health and prolonging the life of old men". In the usages the author gives the recette "of cocoa in jam"; chocolate, its origin and preparation, the uses that could be derived from chocolate for the use of medicine, cocoa butter, plasters for curing ulcers and other ointments. The second part deals with sugar: origin and cultivation, manufacture of all kinds of sugar, remedies that can be extracted. At the end, there is a Digression on the Balsam of Copahu and the Manner of Making Lemongrass, or the Water of Barbados taken from ALDE on Google. See: G.
