Hardcover. Condizione: Good. 1st Edition. D.J. Ackland Vintage 1950 Royal Navy Shipwright Apprentice Technical Notebooks: Naval Architecture, Warship Construction, Salvage Diving Engineering Archive Author: ACKLAND, D. J. (4th & 5th Year Shipwright Apprentice) Publisher: Handwritten Manuscript Archive / Admiralty Royal Dockyard, United Kingdom Date Published: 1950-1951 Binding: Hardcover / Manuscript Ledger Condition: Good An highly detailed two-volume set of original post-World War II handwritten technical notebooks compiled by D. J. Ackland during his 4th and 5th years as a Shipwright Apprentice for the British Admiralty. Spanning June 1950 to February 1951, these heavy folio-sized ledgers (approx. 33cm tall) contain over 300 pages of dense, neatly penned text, advanced mathematical calculations, and well executed hand-drawn technical illustrations documenting the rigorous training curriculum of the immediate post-war Royal Navy. Crucially, this archive captures a monumental era of technological transition in naval engineering, explicitly detailing the shift from traditional riveting techniques to modern electric arc welding in military warship construction. Bound in contemporary merchant ledger cloth covers. Outer boards are rubbed and worn at the edges with a few light surface marks, but remain structurally sound and tight. Internally clean, bright, and very good overall. Heavily illustrated throughout. Note: This is a substantial, heavy set weighing over 2 kilograms unpacked; additional international shipping charges may apply. Official Admiralty Sign-Off: The final page of Volume One features an official ink stamp reading "FOREMAN OF THE YARD", dated 15/2/51, complete with a handwritten assessment from the supervising trade officer: "A very neat book. Get sketches inked in." Military Warship Construction: Includes a superb, detailed cross-section diagram titled "Barbette Structure Cruiser / Section Through Centre of Turret." The drawing maps out the upper, lower, and platform deck layouts, notes precise armour plate weights in pounds (Lbs), and identifies Non-Cemented (N.C.) protection rings. Underwater Salvage & Diving Engineering: Features extensive instructional responses regarding specialized military diving protocols. Covers electrical safety for underwater arc welding (including the application of "Sherovex" anti-electrolysis varnish on diving dress) and a detailed cross-section diagram of an Oxy-Hydrogen Underwater Cutting Torch with an adjustable air nozzle. Small Craft Boatbuilding: Detailed construction schemas and framing specifications for standard-issue Royal Navy support craft, covering a 14' Sailing Dinghy, 27' Whaler, 32' Cutter, and a 25' Fast Motor Boat with a double-diagonal hard chine hull layout. Fold-Out Scale Line Plan: Features a large, multi-panelled fold-out "Sheer Drawing of a Tug Boat" drafted to a precise scale of 1/4 inch = 1 foot. The plate is signed by Ackland in June 1950 and displays the full sheer plan, body plan, half-breadth plan, and principal offsets. Bound-In Cyanotype Blueprints: Contains an authentic, vibrant blue cyanotype blueprint sheet titled "Ships' Boats" along with official printed instructional diagrams issued by the Admiralty Drawing Office (D.O.) bound alongside the text. Mechanical Linkages & Steering Runs: Comprehensive schematics mapping internal ship machinery, universal joints, expansion couplings, and ball-bearing gearboxes for mechanical rod gearing runs. A unique, museum-grade primary source archive offering rare insight into British mid-century naval architecture, dockyard education, and military diving salvage history. D.J. Ackland (illustratore).…
