Aggiungi al carrelloDecorative Cloth. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. A very good copy in the original decorative cloth binding with 20 hand coloured plates. This book is part of Lovell Reeve's Popular History series designed for young people. All the books measure around 13 x 16.6cm and came in a gilt decorative cloth binding or could be bound to taste. They had particularly well produced colour plates, although the quality of the writing varied. This copy is in its original binding which is bright and clean. The spine ends are pulled with 3 tiny splits at the top (at the joints and in the middle). Corners are turned. There is the decorative bookplate of Edward Braxton Reynolds, Public Analyst (motto - There was death in the pot) at the front pastdown endpaper. A 24pp publisher's catalogue is tipped in at the front endpapers. Contents with tissue-guarded hand coloured frontispiece and 19 further plates. Plates and text are generally very clean and in very good condition. There is some light toning towards text page edges, particularly at the top edge, and some text pages are unopened. Pages 41-44 have slight loss at the top where they have been poorly opened. Some stitching is slightly wobbly. Achilles, F Reeve (illustratore).…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. First Edition. 12mo; xii & 404 pages; Publisher's blue-gray pebbled cloth, top, fore and bottom edges trimmed rough. Elaborate gilt-blocked spine and decorative gilt figure centered on the front cover. (The latter is a detailed version, stamped in gilt, of 'Actinia crassicornis' (see plate XIV). The spine is somewhat faded and muted, the gilt plate on the cover is brighter. The endpapers in this copy are white paper with a subtle marbled printed pattern -- these seem to be 20th century replacements (and have had the effect of tightening the hinges of this copy). The sewing is sound. First edition. The author was David Landsborough [1774-1854] a keen and accomplished amateur naturalist who was also a minister of the Free Church of Scotland. He published a 'Popular History of British Seaweeds' in 1849, which was well received. This success led to his invitation to join the Linnean Society of London in that year; the present work was also commissioned as a result. While this volume, with its delicate, partially colored plates may have been intended as a work for the young, it has earned a pace in R. B . Freeman's 'British Natural History Books 1495â"1900: A Handlist' -- (see number 2152). The large cover plate depicts what is now called 'Urticina crassicornis' -- commonly known as the mottled anemone, the painted anemone or the Christmas anemone. Twenty engraved plates.…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. *** IF YOU LIVE OUTSIDE THE UK YOU MUST CHOOSE PRIORITY MAIL SHIPPING AT CHECKOUT SO THAT I CAN SEND THIS BOOK AIR MAIL WITH TRACKING AND INSURANCE. IF YOU DO NOT CHOOSE PRIORITY MAIL, I WILL REFUSE YOUR ORDER AND I WILL NOT TRADE WITH YOU AGAIN. *** This is a UK first edition hardcover, published by Reeve, Benham, and Reeve in 1849. The photos show the condition better than I can describe, however overall I am grading as Very Good condition for its age, The book has the original brown boards with the gilt front cover illustration intact and a straight spine, sharp corners and firm spine ends. However the spine ends are scuffed lightly as you can see. When you open the book you'll see that the front end paper has split from the jacket along the seam but is still attached and easily remedied. There is an owner inscription dated 1876 and the end papers are toned / foxed. The text block is solid with clean pages overall, aside from the odd intrusion of fox spots on several pages, but nothing significant. The book has 368 pages with several pages at the end advertising other works in press or due to be in July 1849. The book is illustrated throughout with black and white illustrations and full page colour illustrations. The title page confirms the publication in 1849.…
