Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. First American Edition. A very good copy of the presumed first American hard cover edition (no explicit edition or printing statement, although the copyright page states that "This book is published on the same day in the Dominion of Canada by Longman, Green & Company, Toronto."), lacking a dust-jacket. Gift inscription in ink to front endsheet (verso of the photo of Lilly Dache); else the text is wholly unmarked, pristine. Moderate wear with some very faint spotting to the front and rear boards. Foxing/dusting to the top page edge of the volume. Gutter on the last page of text of the volume (264-5) is slightly cracked, revealing the webbing here and there, which remains intact: there is no wobble to the board. "It all began one day in France when my mother slapped my hands and said: 'Lilly, you are a bad girl! You have cut up my best blouse to make a hat!'" A lovely copy.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good dj. Illustrated by (dj design) S.K.A | (line portrait) Eric (illustratore). First Edition. [slight bumping/fraying to cloth at top corners and top of spine, light soiling to edges of text block, one-time owner's signature at top of ffep; jacket moderately edgeworn, some paper loss at both ends of spine, spine also slightly darkened]. The noted French-born but New York-based millinerista (I made that up), whose fashionable hats were all the rage in the 1930s and 1940s, here "explains the finer points of this illusive thing called glamour with such contagious enthusiasm that you find yourself making a mental checkup on your outlook on life, your face, your figure, your hair, your clothes, your posture, your speaking voice, your home, and the man in your life!" (I strongly suspect that anybody who actually DID such a thorough mental self-checkup would probably just go home and crawl into bed for six weeks.) But never fear, Lilly wants to help you, not depress you, by offering "something tangible -- basic information that transcends changing styles and passing years -- not a formula for mass market beauty and charm, but the secret of personal expression in your makeup, your clothes, your home and manners -- to make you stand out from the crowd." According to the jacket blurb, only one floor of her famous nine-story Manhattan building was devoted to her signature creations (i.e. hats), and another to dresses ("fashions and their fripperies") -- but a whole FIVE floors were given over to "a vast laboratory of glamour," so I guess you could say that this book presents the results of her research. NOTE that some minor internal repairs to a couple of the jacket's folding edges have been performed by a professional paper conservator.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. DACHE, Lilly Inscribed on FFEP [265] pp. Coward McCann 1946 8 3/8" x 5 7/8" Jacket by Constantin Alajalov Deluxe edition in cerise pink satin slipcase Lilly Daché (1898 31 December 1989) was a European-born American milliner and fashion designer. Daché began her career in New York City as a salesperson, working at Macy's and an independent hat shop on the Upper West Side. Daché and a co-coworker bought the independent hat store. A few months later, Daché bought out her coworker. Daché's major contributions to millinery were draped turbans, brimmed hats molded to the head, half hats, visored caps for war workers, cone-tipped berets, colored snoods, and romantic massed-flower shapes. Daché is reported to have said, "Glamour is what makes a man ask for your telephone number. But it also is what makes a woman ask for the name of your dressmaker." Despite the economic effects of the Depression and World War II, Daché's business flourished in the 1930s and 1940s. Daché's hats cost upwards of $20 at a time when a hat could be bought or just a few dollars, but hats were still considered a cost-effective way for a woman to update her wardrobe. She was also well known for making her visored caps and cone-tipped berets for women working in factories. In 1937, Daché moved her entire operation to a nine-story building on East 56th Street, combining her retail sales, wholesale trade, workroom and personal space. Both the designer Halston and the hair stylist Kenneth worked for her before going into business for themselves. Estimates of Daché's yearly production ran as high as 30,000 hats a year. By 1949, Daché was designing clothing accessories, perfume, and costume jewelry. Celebrity clients included Sonja Henie, Audrey Hepburn, Carole Lombard and Marlene Dietrich. Not only was her brand well known, Lilly herself became famous. She was a mystery guest on a 28 August 1955 episode of the sophisticated television game show What's My Line? (panelist Arlene Francis eventually guessed her identity). She is also referenced in the song "Tangerine" performed by the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra. In the 1957 film, Designing Woman, Lauren Bacall's character Marilla Brown, says she would bet a Lilly Dache hat in the voice over exposition of the background of the love story. Daché's books include Lilly Daché's Glamour Book (1956) and her autobiography, Talking through My Hats (1946). When Dache retired in 1968, Loretta Young bought her last thirty hats. Lilly Daché died in Louvecienne, France at the age of 91 in 1989. Inscribed by Author(s).

A largely unbroken, notably scarce, run of 40 issues of La Dépêche (September 1949 until October 1950) together with three issues of La Note de Paris (August and October 1950). This run has a key fashion association, the subscriber being renowned milliner, fashion designer, and female entrepreneur Lilly Daché (?1892-1989) during her "heyday in the 1940s and early 1950s" (ANB). Born in Bègles, France, Lilly Daché "began her millinery training with her aunt, a dressmaker in Bordeaux, but talent and ambition soon led to a four-year apprenticeship with Caroline Reboux in Paris. She later worked for both Suzanne Talbot and Georgette, also noted Parisian milliners" (ANB). Reboux and Talbot are both featured in La Dépêche: Reboux, nos. 49 and 137; Talbot, no. 116, 139, and 141. Daché moved to New York in 1924 and immediately found work in a small hat store, the Bonnet Shop, which she soon bought from her employer. By the early 1940s Daché was America's premier milliner with an "elegant New York salon in which she employed 150 milliners, shops in Chicago and Miami, wholesale designs sold to more than forty stores across the country, and more than half a million dollars in business each year, selling hats priced from $35 to $500" (ibid.). Her regular subscription to the French fashion magazines collected here, and her occasional marginal crayon marks highlighting segments of text, demonstrates her desire to stay at the cutting edge of fashion and remain connected to her early roots, allowing her to maintain her reputation as a French designer. "Her growing awareness that hats were losing their place as a vital fashion accessory, combined with her inherent ambition and energy, inspired Daché to branch out into other areas of fashion and beauty. By the mid-1950s she had completely revamped her salon and was designing, in addition to her own line of hats, dresses, accessories, jewellery, lingerie, furs, perfume, and cosmetics, plus men's shirts and ties" (ibid.). Both La Dépêche and La Note de Paris were female-directed independent fashion magazines for both a French and American audience featuring sketches of new French designs for clothes and accessories, with commentary and "gossip" in both French and English. Included in these richly illustrated magazines are designs by key couturiers such as Christian Dior, Balenciaga and Pierre Balmain, as well as by milliners such as Simone Cange and Madamme Paulette. Extensive runs of La Dépêche such as these are almost unheard of in commerce, with no such collections of this ephemeral publication traced at auction. They are equally uncommon institutionally with just two collections traced; the Bibliotheque nationale de France hold a run dating from 1954 to 1966, and the Fashion Institute of Technology hold a run of 229 also finishing in 1966. Likewise, runs of La Note de Paris are scarce, with none traced at auction and one set traced institutionally at the Bibliotheque nationale de France. La Dépêche: 40 issues, tall quarto (328/310 x 210 mm). Text in French and English. Illustrated throughout with ink sketches of designs. Original illustrated cream paper wrappers; 8 wire-stitched as issued, titles in blue to front covers; 32 staple-bound in upper left corner as issued, titles in black to front cover (of these, 2 unopened and within their franked postage bands; folded: 210 x 115 mm, a further 2 (nos 42 and 43) single, unbound, sheets). Together with 3 issues of La Note de Paris: tall quarto (310 x 215 mm). Original illustrated yellow paper wrappers, cord-bound as issued, titles printed in black to front covers. Housed in a dark blue cloth flat-back box by the Chelsea Bindery. Slight nicks and creasing to edges, horizontal creases due to folding from postage, contents faintly toned, occasional rust marks from staples; a remarkably well-preserved set of this fragile publication.
