ST. CHARLES BORROMEO'S CRYSTAL COFFIN. Engraved broadside, 50.5 x 37.5 cm to platemarks, on sheet 50.5 x 37.5 cm. A few marginal repaired closed tears; one or two insignificant infills in the upper right quadrant. Rare engraved broadside issued to commemorate the week-long exhibition of St. Charles Borromeo's corpse in the Piazza Santa Maria Podone, where it resided in an 'artificial temple' during renovations to the crypt of the Duomo in September, 1751. The broadside is recorded in just one copy in OCLC, at the Newberry Library. Removed from the scurolo or crypt on the 19th September, the ornate coffin pictured here was solemnly processed just a few streets to the Piazza Santa Maria Podone, where Renato Borromeo had sponsored an apparato for the display of his ancestor. The magnificent cassa, made of silver and glass and decorated with gold and gemstones, had been donated by Philip IV of Spain in 1638. Around the city, the saint was celebrated with an artillery salute, theatrical performances, and ballets (cf the useful account in Cascetta & Zanlonghi, Il Teatro a Milano nel Settecento, pp. 156-7). While the present broadside faithfully depicts the saint's crystal coffin, it also adds numerous allegorical elements: most strikingly, an enormous shroud beneath the coffin which is also held aloft in the background by angels, into which Borromeo's motto, 'humilitas' has been incorporated dozens of times. Around the foreground of the sarcophagus we find Borromeo's traditional devotees: the downtrodden and poor (tortured prisoners, a woman nursing two infants), whom he famously assisted especially during times of plague. Finally, within the coffin itself the saint's skeletal remains are clearly visible, dressed in his episcopal robes. "His remains lie in a silver coffin, supported on a silver altar, each elaborately engraved and embossed. The hexagonal chamber has the whole surface of its walls coated with plates of silver, on which are reliefs representing a series of scenes from his life. In one he is giving alms to the plague-stricken; in a second he is baptizing children in a plague hospital; in a third he is walking with feet and head bare, and with a halter round his neck, in a plague procession, preceding the sacred relics that are carried beneath a canopy." Veduta prospettico laterale della Villa Alari a Cernusco sul Naviglio. La villa venne commissionata all'architetto Giovanni Ruggeri da Giacinto Alari, il quale era titolare di diversi feudi nel Ducato di Milano e fu Commissario generale delle Munizioni dello Stato di Milano. I lavori per la costruzione incominciarono già dal 1703 e si conclusero tra il 1719 ed il 1725.La villa venne affittata per quattro anni (dal 1771 al 1775) daal'Arciduca Ferdinando d'Asburgo, Governatore della Lombardia austriaca, che la utilizzò come residenza estiva fino alla costruzione della Villa Reale di Monza.…

Veduta di Palazzo Brentano ripreso dal giardino. L'edificio venne realizzato per volontà del conte di Caltignaga tesoriere generale del Ducato di Milano durante l'amministrazione austriaca. La costruzione dell'edificio ebbe inizio al principio del 1732 e si concluse nel 1738.

La grande carta geografica illustra quasi tutta l'Italia settentrionale: come indicato nel titolo, le parti occidentale e orientale del nord Italia, nelle quali sono rispettivamente compresi il ducato sabaudo, lo stato di Milano, la repubblica genovese; l'episcopato di Trento, i ducati di Mantova, Modena e Parma, la Repubblica di Venezia. Le zone montuose sono rese in modo pittorico e le citt? principali sono evidenziate dall'uso del colore rosso. Notevole la messe di informazioni topografiche.La carta, di dimensioni considerevoli, risulta divisa in trentadue fogli rettangolari applicati su un supporto in tela azzurra e si presenta ripiegata in un astuccio nero in cartoncino sui cui fianchi Ë riportato il titolo "MANTOVA" in lettere capitali dorate.La carta in esame riporta, oltre alla dedica al personaggio illustre di cui sopra (cfr. campo Iscrizioni), lo stemma comitale dello stesso, posto al centro di una lunga iscrizione celebrativa in latino che termina con l'indicazione "Dabam Mediolani Nonas Majas Anni MDCCXXXV".Autore dell'incisione Ë Marco Antonio Dal Re, incisore (e in seguito anche editore) di origine bolognese trasferitosi a Milano nel 1723, dopo un soggiorno a Cremona nel 1719 dove gi? svolgeva l'attivit? di incisore. Engraving from the first edition of Dal Re's Ville di Delizia (1726), with title below in Italian and French, overall size 631 x 126mm. £1250 Robecco was situated some 17 miles from Milan on a tributary canal of the river Ticino. It was designed for the main part by the Milanese architect Federico Pietrasanta c 1699). This view, one of 7 in the original work (not reproduced in the Polifilo volume) shows the layout of the four-storeyed palace with the main central section flanked by four wings. Adjoining the left wings is a quadripartite walled garden. The four plots are layed out in symmetrical parterres intersected with paths; trees in pots on pedestals stand at the corners, and an elaborate curved octagonal fountain plays at the intersection. Behind the villa and garden flows the Naviglio canal; the lack of a road coming up to the semi-circular wall of the palazzo suggests that the villa was probably best reached by canal. Oreno lay some 14 miles from Milan near the town of Monza, and below a small hill on the slopes of Mount Brianza. The first designs for the villa were done in the early 18th century by the owner Giovanni Battista Scotti himself. Two courtyards with numerous linking outbuildings either side lead to the main villa: a two-storied building with three-floored central elevation, there is a portico below and a clock tower above, with a stairway leading to its pinnacle from a belvedere either side. The succession of gardens extending to the foothills of Mount Brianza were a wonder in their day. An ingenious system of fountains plays in the parterre gardens adjoining the palace, with either side an unusual row of five adjacent berceaux. A splendid wrought iron gateway leads over a path to a second enclosed garden. Here again the layout is quadripartite, each section planted with rows of small trees. To the left is a 'bosquet' with grazing and prancing deer; grilles in the wall allow one to watch them. Further gardens towards the range of hills show 'boulingrins' with gazebos, labyrinths, and bordered walks beside a long canal leading to the grand belvedere with elaborate Neptune fountain. Nothing now remains of this monumentally grand conception. The villa was subsequently altered by Simone Cantoni (fl. 17361818), and the garden completely transformed into the English landscape style.
