Sie basiert auf der Objektbeziehungstheorie, welche davon ausgeht, dass die Psychopathologie und die interpersonellen Schwierigkeiten bei Persönlichkeitsstörungen auf nicht integrierte Persönlichkeitsanteile zurückzuführen sind. Ziel der Behandlung ist es, im Rahmen der therapeutischen Beziehung diese nicht integrierten Selbst- und Objektrepräsentanzen zu aktivieren und durch wiederholte Klärung, Konfrontation und Interpretation eine Integration und Stärkung der Identität der Betroffenen zu erreichen.Der Band geht ausführlich auf die stationäre Behandlung ein und beleuchtet praxisnah zentrale Aspekte, wie Diagnostik und Therapievereinbarungen, Behandlungsphasen, Therapiefokus und Arbeiten im interdisziplinären Team. Des Weiteren werden relevante Komorbiditäten und spezifische Komplikationen (z.B. Suizidalität, Agieren) thematisiert. Kapitel zur Supervision und zur Wirksamkeit runden diesen Band ab, der auch ambulant tätigen Fachpersonen wertvolle Anregungen für die Behandlung dieser herausfordernden Patientengruppe bietet.
