Banks [1742 - 1820] was a well connected and educated amateur botanist who was included in James Cook's first voyage around the world, probably at the influence of the earl of Sandwich. The botanical specimens collected on Cook's first voyage by…Banks, Daniel Solander, Sydney Parkinson & the crew of 90 aboard the Endeavour were the largest and most stunning collection of hitherto unknown specimens of fauna and flora collected on a single voyage of discovery. Banks went on to hold the position of president of the Royal Society for over 41 years. and sent botanists around the world to collect plants, making Kew the world's leading botanical garden. He is credited for bringing 30,000 plant specimens home with him; amongst them, he was the first European to document 1,400. Banks advocated British settlement in New South Wales and the colonisation of Australia, as well as the establishment of Botany Bay as a place for the reception of convicts, and advised the British government on all Australian matters.
