This provocative new collection of essays by a Pulitzer Prize winner deals with the challenging themes of discovery and surprise in history. The author has had unparalleled success in writing history and essays. The Discoverers, The Creators, and The Americans have been acclaimed all over the world and have been translated into twenty-five languages. Cleopatra's Nose is not a miscellany but rather a selection of recent essays illustrating specific subjects that have preoccupied Boorstin for several decades. Tantalizing themes all: How sometimes discovery only increases our ignorance. What were the specific historical opportunities in the New World? How has the fourth kingdomthe kingdom of machines-contradicted Darwinian expectations, contributed to a confusion of statistics, created the need for the unnecessary, and highlighted the paradoxes of science and the politics of common sense? In a personal postscript, Boorstin gives us a memorable and affectionate portrait of his father and optimistically celebrates the United States as the Land of the Unexpected.

Beveridge, "the March of the Flag, " 1898, ed. by Ernest R. May (pp. 621-629), treats the Spanish-American War. Daniel Joseph Boorstin (October 1, 1914 - February 28, 2004) was an American historian at the University of Chicago who wrote on many topics in American and world history. He was appointed the twelfth Librarian of the United States Congress in 1975 and served until 1987. He was instrumental in the creation of the Center for the Book at the Library of Congress. Boorstin became a political conservative and a prominent exponent of consensus history. He argued in The Genius of American Politics (1953) that ideology, propaganda, and political theory are foreign to America. His writings were often seen, along with those of historians such as Richard Hofstadter, Louis Hartz and Clinton Rossiter, as belonging to the "consensus school", which emphasized the unity of the American people and downplayed class and social conflict. Boorstin especially praised inventors and entrepreneurs as central to the American success story. An American Primer is an anthology of key American documents, laws, and writings that illustrate the nation's history and culture. It features 83 selections, from the Mayflower Compact to a 1965 Voting Rights speech, with commentary from prominent historians like Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. and Henry Steele Commager, providing context on the American way of life. This features analysis and commentary from numerous distinguished historians. and covers a wide range of American political, economic, and cultural history.
