Hier formierte sich das Bischofsamt, seine Stellung zu den weltlichen Gewalten, aber auch zu Klerus und Diözese neu. Das Verhältnis zum Mönchtum, die Pflege von Liturgie, Büchern,… Wissenschaft und Kunst, die Ausbildung der diözesanen Institutionen und das Verhältnis zu den Missionsbezirken und den Besitzungen im Osten wurden neu begründet oder reformiert. Bald nach seinem Tod 994 wurde Wolfgang vor allem im Kloster St. Emmeram als Heiliger verehrt und 1051 von Papst Leo IX. heiliggesprochen. Aber nicht nur in Regensburg, wo er in späterer Zeit zum Patron der Diözese aufstieg, bildete sich eine intensive Wolfgangsverehrung. Im Spätmittelalter wurde er zum vielverehrten Wundertäter und Kirchenpatron, die Wallfahrt nach St. Wolfgang am Wolfgangssee blühte auf und nahm überregionale, europäische Dimensionen an. Vorliegender Band reflektiert nicht nur Wolfgangs Lebensgeschichte und seine innovativen Weichenstellungen für die Regensburger Kirche, sondern mehr als 1000 Jahre Verehrungs- und Kunstgeschichte.
