Rare little book, which we have never encountered before in our decades of selling cinema material. Bebe Daniels was a silent film actress who appeared in many Harold Lloyd comedies before moving on to noted features playing with Rudolph Valentino (1924) in Monsieur Beaucaire. Arte / Stampa / Poster
Original Art-Nouveau style illustration of actress Bebe Daniels painted on pressboard, circa early 1920s, noted as starring in "Adam and Eve" with Jack Holt. There is no record of either Daniels or Holt starring in a film either titled or with the working title of "Adam and Eve," nor could we find any news sources for a proposed production with that title. The only two films starring both Daniels and Holt are "Ducks and Drakes" (1921) and "North of the Rio Grande" (1922). A beautifully executed illustration of the young actress, likely as lobby art for a silent film theater. Bebe Daniels was a noted actress, singer, dancer, writer, and producer who appeared in over 230 films over her 50 year career in film. Daniels began her career as a child actress in silent films, and later became a star in musicals such as "Rio Rita" (1929), directed by Luther Reed, and co-starring John Boles. 17.75 x 25 inches, pressboard 1/2 inch thick. Very Good, with five screw holes, a chip to the lower left corner, and a crack to the upper left corner, mended on the verso with paper tape and cello tape.

Aggiungi al carrelloFIRST EDITION, handling mark to page at rear, pp. xiii, 206, crown 8vo, original green cloth ('waterproof', the publisher advertises), backstrip lettered in gilt, a little soiled and speckled to boards, faint spots to edges and endpapers, dustjacket slightly browned and soiled, a little nicked and chipped at extremities, very good. Inscribed on the flyleaf by both editors: 'With my best wishes, Bebe Daniels', a little doodle beneath her name; 'And with my best wishes, Jill Allgood'. The former an American film-star, based in London since the mid-1930s, the latter a British radio producer and writer - whose friendship with her co-editor would later yield a biography of Daniels and her husband, Ben Lyon (among the contributors here). Their dedications at the head of the work set the project in the context of the recent War: Allgood considers it a 'continuation of our work together' during the conflict (the radio series 'Hi Gang!' - though rather different in nature, it does have contributors in common); Daniels, meanwhile, refers to the relaxation of rationing, in paying tribute to 'those unsung heroines the British housewives who, at last, can get some of the tools with which to do the job'. The recipes from starry quarters include the rather unadventurous - Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh collaborate on a 'Green Salad for a Salad Bowl', or Gregory Peck's 'Leaf Lettuce Salad' - to the more outlandish contributions of Humphrey Bogart ('Asparagus with Tongue and Cheese'), Richard Attenborough and Sheila Sim ('Fruit and Jelly Mould', which involves crumbling a set fruit jelly over lettuce hearts and seasonal fruit), 'Chicken and Pineapple Aspic' (a contribution by the editors) or Lionel Barrymore's 'Jellied Walnut-Apple Salad'. Bob Hope, Lauren Bacall, Tyrone Power, John Mills, Arthur Askey, Veronica Lake, Bing Crosby and Betty Grable are among the other contributors.

Aggiungi al carrelloSix episodes, approx. 40 mimeographed pp., secured with split pins to top left. Edgeworn and a little dusty, some title pages missing, extensive annotations and amendments throughout. First editions. Life With The Lyons was a long-running domestic comedy, scripted around real events and starring real-life husband and wife Ben Lyon and Bebe Daniels, 'Hollywood's happiest couple'. Running over eleven series between 1950 and 1961, it spawned two films and three television series, and was one of the first radio comedies to dispense with musical interludes and concentrate entirely on its cast. The Lyons, an American couple, had settled in London during the war; their first radio appearance was in Hi Gang! (1940-1949). Their children Richard and Barbara joined the cast for Life With The Lyons, and the show went on to chronicle the family's ups and downs for more than 300 episodes. The regular supporting cast was Molly Weir, Horace Percival, Hugh Morton and Doris Rogers. The six episodes offered here are: Series 4, Episode 14: Be My Valentine; Series 4, Episode 19: Go To Your Corner (lacking title page); Series 4, Episode 23: A Ghost In The House; Series 5, Episode 18: Second Honeymoon (lacking title page); Series 5, Episode 19: I Can Do It Myself; and Series 6, Episode 21: Come Back A Little, Bebe. Until recently there were just three recorded episodes of Life With The Lyons in the BBC archive. But when these three were broadcast in 2011, a private collector came forward with his own stash -- of more than 200 episodes. Thanks to Mr. Graeme Stevenson, the show is now one of the best represented radio shows from the 1950s in the BBC's holdings.
