Aber nach 35 Jahren in Hamburg habe ich auch eine Menge aufgeschrieben: Artikel für Programmhefte, Notizen zu entstehenden Werken und für Ballett-Werkstätten, Briefe und Tagebuch…-Aufzeichnungen während meiner choreografischen Arbeit.Bei den meisten Texten handelt es sich um spezifische Ballette und so habe ich diese unterschiedlichen Texte geordnet: nach Spielzeiten und nach Werken, wie sie in Hamburg kreiert oder aufgeführt worden sind. Vor jedem Kapitel steht eine Rückblende, in der die für mich wichtigsten Ereignisse der Spielzeit kurz notiert sind. Vor allem die unveröffentlichten, eher privaten, unfertigen und sicher nicht literarischen Schriften zeigen andere Aspekte meiner Arbeit und meines Denkens - fast eine fragmentarische Autobiographie. Das Schreiben 'über' die Ballette und der Blick 'hinter' die rein physische Arbeit lässt vielleicht ein tieferes Verständnis für die künstlerische Entwicklung des HAMBURG BALLETT und meiner selbst zu. Ich habefestgestellt, dass gewisse -Prinzipien, wenn auch in Variationen, gleich geblieben sind - obwohl sich meine Sprache mit den Jahren sehr verändert hat. Mosaikartig entstehen durch die Veröffentlichung der Texte Zusammenhänge, Erkenntnisse und hierdurch neue Erfahrungen, die eine vielschichtige Sicht auf mein Werk ermöglichen und auch die dunkleren Aspekte der Arbeit nicht verleugnen." John Neumeier Autor: John Neumeier, geboren 1942 in Milwaukee/Wisconsin, USA, ist seit 1973 Ballettdirektor und Chefchoreograf des Hamburger Ballett, seit 1996 zusätzlich Ballettintendant. 2007 wurde er zum Hamburger Ehrenbürger ernannt. John Neumeier erregte schon in jungen Jahren Aufsehen durch seine Neudeutung bekannter Handlungsballette wie "Der Nussknacker", "Romeo und Julia" und "Daphnis und Chloe".
