This is a charming homage to the art of handmade paper-making. Authored by John Mason, an English paper-maker, printer, and proprietor of his "Twelve by Eight" paper mill based in Leicester, England. At the time of this book's publication, Mason notes in his Preface that only two small paper mills remain in England. This book describes Mason's own paper-making craft and an overview of the general paper-making process including collection of plant materials (such as gladiolus and iris leaves); preparation for beating, beating the plant materials to a pulp; moulding the paper; use of the vat and pressing equipment; forming the sheets and couching; separating, wet-pressing, and drying; sizing; and use of decorative and straining devices. Mason also describes paper-making practices in other countries. Graham, Rigby (illustratore).
