Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. Large-format hardcover, reprint, 280 pages, glossy paper, copiously illustrated, NOT ex-library. Weight 1350g. Mild wear, book is clean, untanned, free of any foxing and age-spotting, with unmarked text; no inscriptions, no stamps. Firm secure binding; clean outer page edges. Untorn, unclipped dust jacket shows regular shelfwear, a bit of creasing, a small barcode sticker on the back. -- Cold Climbs describes in words and pictures the hostile environment in which the snow and ice-climber plies his craft. The strange activity of climbing the British crags in savage winter conditions has given rise to some of the greatest episodes in the history of the sport. The climbs seem to exude a sense of menace and legend: Zero, Point Five, Parallel B, Black Cleft, Sticil Face, Labyrinth, Devil's Appendix, Galactic Hitchhiker, Eagle Ridge are names to thrill the spirit, set the pulse racing and fire the ambitions of any real climber. In this book, the 5th title in his long-running series on British mountaineering, Ken Wilson has collaborated with the experienced winter-climbing enthusiasts Dave Alcock and John Barry to create an impressive picture of a challenging sport. The epics and adventures that are the stuff of winter mountaineering are reflected in a memorable collection of essays, gathering together much fine writing, both anecdotal and descriptive. Many of the finest winter climbs in Scotland are described, with particular attention being given to the great cliffs of Ben Nevis, Lochnagar and Creag Meagaidh. In addition there are eight chapters dealing with Lakeland routes and twelve more describing the varied climbs of North Wales. One useful chapter is added to summarise the winter climbing that can be enjoyed on rare occasions in Ireland. The book also reflects a wide range of difficulty from the classic snow gullies of Snowdon and Great End to the extreme mixed climbs of Ben Nevis and the ice walls of Craig y Rhaeadr and the Devil's Kitchen. Many of the essays refer to the activities of the pioneers - J. Norman Collie, Harold Raeburn, James Horst Brunnerman Bell, John Mackenzie, William Hutchison Murray, Tom Patey, Hamish MacInnes, Jimmy Marshall, Robin Smith, Ken Grassick and Graeme Nicol - which have assumed an heroic quality with the passage of time, in no way devalued by the technological progress of recent years. To complete the formula of interlocking interest, the book is illustrated by an invaluable collection of photographs (many in colour), some depicting the crucial sections of climbs, others concentrating on the cliffs, often wet and grassy in summer but transformed by winter into arctic north faces of Eiger-like ferocity. Cold Climbs is unashamedly designed for the enthusiast, to be studied greedily for inspiration and memory, and forms an essential addition to the libraries of all committed mountaineers.
