Edward Topsell (1572-1625) was an Elizabethan clergyman famous for writing massive, legendary bestiaries packed with real animals and mythical beasts. He wrote a major manuscript on birds around 1613-1614, which was an English translation and alphabetical abridgment of Italian naturalist Ulisse Aldrovandi's Ornithologiae. However, Topsell never finished it before he died—it only covered birds starting with A, B, and C (stopping mid-way on page 250). The unique, 248-leaf manuscript sat hidden away in the Henry E. Huntington Library in California for centuries. An very good copy of Topsell's rare, incomplete Elizabethan ornithological manuscript, painstakingly transcribed by Thomas P. Harrsison and F. Typesetting and layout are rhythmic, clear, and sometimes innovative, as in the split and tilted engraving for Ophelia's crow-flowers and deadnettles.
