Not only are many of the manual techniques "forgotten" - what are we ever going to do without calculators! - but the problems themselves will lead to fascinating inquiries. For example, "The tune of Yankee Doodle was composed by a doctor of the British army to ridicule the Americans in 1755; how many years to the present time?" or for the more advanced student, "Suppose a gentleman's income to be 600 guineas a year, and that he spends 25s. 6d. per day, one day with another: how much will he have at the end of the year?" or "There are 1000 men besieged in a town with provisions for 5 weeks, allowing each man 16 ounces a day.
