No Binding. Condizione: Near Fine. Scarce double-sided election broadside issued during the famous Northumberland Parliamentary Election of 1826. One side contains a political squib entitled A Riddle, discussing apparent contradictions in statements attributed to Sir Charles Loraine and Robert William Brandling concerning Matthew Bell and the election campaign. The other side contains A New Song, a seven-stanza election ballad urging support for Henry Thomas Liddell and praising his character, talents and political supporters. A fine example of the diverse election literature generated during one of the most fiercely contested county elections of the Georgian period. Songs, riddles and satirical handbills of this nature were intended for temporary use and survive considerably less frequently than formal candidate addresses. Printed by W. Davison, Alnwick. Single-sheet broadside printed on both sides. 27.4 x 22.4 cm. Condition: Near fine. Fold creases. Light age-toning and minor handling wear. Strong impressions and excellent legibility. A scarce survival of Georgian political ephemera and Northumberland electoral history.
