Neuware - 'Chinese Characters; Their Origin, Etymology, History, Classification and Signification' is a monumental scholarly work dedicated to the evolution and structural logic of the Chinese writing system. Authored by the prominent Sinologist Léon Wieger and translated by L. Davrout, this volume serves as an exhaustive guide for linguists, historians, and students of the Chinese language. The text provides a rigorous examination of the etymological roots of thousands of characters, tracing their development from early pictographic forms to the sophisticated ideograms of the classical and modern eras. Wieger organizes the material through a systematic classification, exploring the primitive symbols, phonetic elements, and radicals that form the building blocks of the script. By detailing the historical transformations and the philosophical significance behind the characters, the work offers a unique window into the intellectual heritage of East Asian civilization.Recognized for its depth and precision, 'Chinese Characters' remains a vital resource for anyone seeking a deep understanding of the world's oldest continuous writing system. Its clear analysis and historical breadth make it an indispensable reference for both academic study and the appreciation of the artistic and cultural value inherent in Chinese calligraphy and philology. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Good. 1st Edition, Limited Edition. First Edition in English. Limited. Frontispiece, Author's Foreword, Translator's Preface, Notes for each Chapter, Indexes, Errata and Corrigenda, List of Illustrations; III, 604 pages [plus 2 or 3 dozen full-page illustrations, 'hors texte']. This book is of mixed condition: The three-quarter-leather and cloth covers are in very good shape except for light rubbing to the extremities and some minor spots on the spine; the gilt lettering is small but still bright. The endpapers are quite age-toned; and the interior leaves show evidence of dampnessperhaps from an overseas voyage? The frontispiece and title page were most affected, with small areas of loss, and both have been reinforced at some point. There is also rippling to the edges of some leaves, clearly visible in the images of actual book. See also some slight offsetting of color from 'A model of Bridegroom's / Bride's Red Card' (pages 464-5). Charmingly, the author has invited the reader to discover "minor errata" to add to the list, and a previous reader has added onein a tiny hand, in pencil. Probably from the name that appears on the title-pageEugenie Zarine. Overall, this is a good copy with all the text and the many illustrations (from photographs, engravings, drawings, etc.) intact, and the binding sound. "This Volume contains the essential notions of the three Sects ju, shih, tao, Literati, Buddhists and Taoists, as taught by them to the people. . . . More specially intended to make known the Chinese language, this book will perhaps also help to a better knowledge of the Chinese thoughts and habits." from the Author's Foreword. As with every book from my father's collection, tipped in at the front is the small, attractive, acid-free bookplate pictured on my homepage. All books are wrapped with special care and are shipped promptlydomestic sales sent with 'delivery confirmation' tracking; international sales sent via global priority, also with tracking.
