Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Hardcover; original green cloth of the publisher (some damage), 20 x 14 cm, 284 pp., English, book condition: Very Good [This description may have been translated by AI.].

hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Publication: London, Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1912 Formatting: Small 4to, pp. xiv, 273. Condition Report Very Good: The publisher's original red cloth binding remains structurally robust and visually striking, with the elaborate gilt decoration to the front board retaining its bright, unoxidised finish. The spine displays some expected age-related darkening and minor rubbing to the extremities, particularly at the head and foot, with the spine gilt slightly dulled but entirely legible. The corners of the boards are lightly bumped with minimal wear to the cloth. The binding is tight and square, and the protective film wrapper has kept the boards well-preserved. Internally, the text block is predominantly clean and fresh, though there is scattered light foxing to the preliminary leaves and occasional faint spotting elsewhere, which is common for this edition. The pages are free from heavy handling marks, and the inner hinges remain perfectly sound. A handsome, well-preserved copy of this beautifully illustrated edition. Catalogue Note This is the first edition with these specific illustrations (often termed the "First Edition Thus"), published by Macmillan and Co. in 1912. While the original text was published unillustrated in 1883, this later release is highly prized for its incorporation of thirty-two magnificent full-colour illustrations by Warwick Goble, one of the premier artists of the Golden Age of Illustration. The book features a printed dedicatory inscription from the author to Captain Richard Carnac Temple, acknowledging his contribution to Indian folklore. Complete, well-preserved copies in the original decorative red cloth, without heavy fading, structural damage, or major internal foxing, have become increasingly scarce on the open market. The volume appeals equally to collectors of Golden Age illustration and those interested in the preservation of South Asian oral traditions. First published in 1883, Folk-Tales of Bengal is a captivating anthology of twenty-two traditional folk and fairy tales collected by the Reverend Lal Behari Day. Sourced directly from local storytellers, including an old Brahman, a village barber, and an elderly Christian woman, the collection preserves the rich oral heritage of Bengal. These enchanting narratives, featuring themes of magic, morality, and mystical creatures, are brilliantly brought to life in this 1912 edition by Warwick Goble. His vibrant colour plates capture the exoticism and romance of Eastern folklore, making this a masterpiece of early twentieth-century book illustration. Warwick Goble (illustratore).…
