The first part of this volume (p.1-158) is taken by a gene…ral history of the French East India Company, its predecessors in the seventeenth century, the Compagnie des Indes Orientales' founded by Colbert in 1664, remodelled by John Law in 1719 into the Compagnie des Indes'. This is followed by seven parts of documentary evidence: official documents, extracts from private memoirs, etc. These parts treat successively the commerce with the East Indies, China, Canada, Senegal (with Cape Verde and the African coast), and Guinea, and separately the coffee trade, and the history of the Company since 1719. The volume ends with a chronological index of facts and titles and indexes of subjects, geographical names, and persons. This is the third volume (though not marked as such) that appeared with the quoted general title. The other two volumes give a detailed account of the tariff of 1664 for exportation (volume 1) and importation (volume 2). This was the chief work of the author, archeologist, poet and historian. He spent some time at the court of Frederick II of Prussia and was a member of the Berlin Academy. He was befriended with Voltaire who published the first edition of his Siecle de Louis XIV' under the name of his friend. *Einaudi 1639. Kress 4380 (volume 3 only). INED 1533. Stourm p.38. Esemplare piuttosto fiorito e brunito,legatura un po'deformata. (12159) Operetta anonima, che taluni attribuivano al conte De Witt (cfr. Gay, II/178), ma in realtà scritta dello storico e… pubblicista Joseph Du Fresne de Francheville (1704-81), che fu chiamato in seguito a Berlino alla corte di Federico II e divenne infine redattore della "Gazette Littéraire de Berlin". Qui egli si finge un "Espion Turc", che viaggiando in Eurpa scrive 16 lettere indirizzate al Sultano, al Gran Vizir, a Osman Pacha, e all'Aga dei Giannizzeri, espone le sue osservazioni sui principali stati europei in occasione della Dieta di Francoforte che incoronò Maria Teresa alla successione imperiale, dando poi luogo alla Guerra di Successione Austriaca. Curiose le pagine dedicate ai cerimoniali della Dieta, ai vari sovrani europei, alle varie confessioni religiose in Germania, ai Quacqueri (Kouakers), ai Pietisti, ai Calvinisti, ai Deisti.
