Londres [Paris], n.p., 1796 but probably 1815. £500.00 Dog eared, dusty, some water staining, missing at least one plate from the first volume an insertion to pages 28-29 and 2 others, the top halves of each half title removed, lower edges of one or two plates very dusty (not affecting image), another plate caught in the dog eared leaves and another worn on the lower margin, roughly opened in places. A fake publication of the great epistolary novel, the imprint of ?Londres' suggests Paris and it is often the case of vice versa with other erotic books from the last three centuries published on either side of the Channel. ESTC cautions 'Matchers beware' and suggests that the wavy line above the date in this book rather than double straight ones, ?An 4' as a date on the first frontispiece and an 8 line title identifies it as a rip off of the true 1796 edition ( referencing Henri Cohen's guide to fake books with engraved plates). The BL's copy of the true first has ?An 4' on the frontispiece. ESTC also sug- gests papier Marais. The wavy lines are present but this cataloguer counts 7 lines not 8, and is unsure of the paper stock and the frontispiece is undated, all of which are identified by Cohen as the other points of issue for a nineteenth-century piracy. No collation is offered for how many plates should be present (though we feel that is moot with any pirate ? for as it is an illegal printing what exactly constitutes a complete copy anyway?). The true edition for 1796 has 2 frontispieces and 13 plates in all including the frontispieces, sug- gesting we are missing 3 illustrations. The engravings by Monnet, Fragonard fils et Ge?rard, en- graved by Baquoy, Duplessis-Bertaux, Dupre?el, Lemire, Patas, Pauquet and Simonet are celebrated in their own right and indeed good imagery is vital to any great erotic book from the libertine era. There are indeed other copies on the market identical to the copy in hand, citing Cohen and 1812. however unlike those leather bound copies, the solution as to what year those copies (and this one) were published may well lie in the wrapper lining from the 1815 first edition of ?
