The abolition of feudal rights, initially welcomed by peasants, resulted in many losing access to common lands, while the uncompensated abolition of tithes deprived rural clergy of much of their income. The confiscation and sale of church lands had limited effects on the overall size of landholdings, but it did lead to the loss of jobs in associated industries and increased demand for land. The removal of trade restrictions and guilds had mixed effects. While it led to increased trade and opportunity, it also contributed to the decline of traditional crafts, such as linen production.
