This book is an intriguing play from the early 20th Century, set in 1999, that peers into the evolving roles of men and women in marriage at the advent of the 20th Century. It tells the story of a married couple whose domestic life unravels as a result of Jean's neglect of her husband, Rollo. Overwhelmed by her social life, Jean leaves Rollo alone with their child most nights while she enjoys the company of other women. Rollo is drawn into an emotional affair with Florence, a woman from his past. The play follows the bitter consequences of Jean and Rollo's fractured marriage and starkly portrays the impact of societal expectations on men and women in relationships during a time of rapid social change. A struggling group of artists stumble upon a charismatic young man named Jack Spencer and convince him to pose as a budding artistic genius in order to gain recognition for their work. As Jack's fame rapidly ascends, the complexities of the art world and the ethics of their deception come into sharp focus. The author explores themes of ambition, authenticity, and the nature of artistic genius, inviting readers to question the boundaries between art and artifice, and the lengths to which people will go to achieve their dreams. Self Wrappers. Condizione: Very Good+. First Edition Thus. 4 pages; Very Good+. (1915) . First Edition Thus. (4) pages; Publisher's illustrated bi-folium publicity program/pamphlet for the 1915 feature-length silent film "The Goose Girl. " This program was printed in Washington DC specifically for a four-day engagement of the film at Washington's picture house - "Strand" - 9th and D N. W. , "Sun. Mon. Tue. Wed. / Jan. 24-25-26-27 [1915]. (Note that this was a first-run engagement; the official release date of the film was January 25, 1915) . The front cover is devoted to a large b/w illustration printed in half-tones from a publicity photograph depicting the film's star, Marguerite Clark" as Gretchen, feeding her geese. The inner pair of pages is devoted to five publicity photographs (b/w halftones) - each with printed decorative borders and captions in banners below, explaining the action. The final page (rear wrapper) has a printed list of the cast, Cast: Marguerite Clark [Gretchen, the goose girl], Monroe Salisbury [King Frederick], Lawrence Peyton [Von Wallenstein], Sidney Deane [Prince Regent of Jugendheit], E. N. Dunbar [Grand Duke of Ehrenstein], James Neill [Count Von Herbeck], P. E. Peters (Page Peters) [Carmichael], H. B. Carpenter (Horace B. Carpenter) [Torpete, the gypsy], Ernest Joy [Hans], J. M. Cassidy [Gottfried], Miss Johnson [Princess Hildegarde], Jane Darwell [Irma]. Below this cast list is a synopsis: "The Story. " This silent 5-reel film had impressive credits: Jesse L. Lasky Feature Play Company, Incorporated, production; distributed by Paramount Pictures Corporation. / Produced by Jesse L. Lasky. Scenario by William C. De Mille, from the novel The Goose Girl by Harold McGrath. Cinematography by Percy Hilburn. / Â 12 January 1915 by Jesse L. Lasky Feature Play Company, Incorporated [LU4166]. Released 25 January 1915. / Standard 35mm spherical 1.33: 1 format. Despite the fact that there appears to have been a re-release of this film in 1918, presumably by the merged entities "Famous Players / Jesse L. Lasky, this silent classic appears now to be lost -- no copies recorded in any public or private collections. There appears to be no OCLC listing for this ephemeral publication; the front cover is identical to the third illustration on the IMDB page for the film (except that the one shown on IMDB has a rubber stamp in the box at the foot for an October 12th showing at the "Majestic Theatre" -- whereas ours has a printed notation for a first-run showing at an important DC landmark picture house. For details of the film, see AFI-F1 n. F1.1665; and Bogdanovich-Dwan p. 33. The "Strand" in DC was originally built in 1888 as the Lincoln Music Hall at 9th Street and D Street, which later became known as the Academy of Music and later still, the Orpheum Theatre. Its last incarnation was as the Strand Theatre, a picture palace reportedly with 1100 seats, operating until the building was raized in 1952. The Library of Congress has a photograph of its marquee with electric lights proclaiming "Photo Plays" -- [and 1930's automobiles on the street]. There is a notice in the July 13, 1920 issue of the Washington "Post, " announcing the opening of the newly redecorated Strand Theater. Vaudeville and first run motion pictures. It is unfortunate that so many of Marguerite Clark's films are now lost; she had been a successful stage actress. As a star in the early silent films, for a couple of years she nearly matched Mary Pickford in popularity and box-office appeal. Jesse Lasky "borrowed" her from Adolph Zukor's Famous Players Film Company for this film -- acknowledged in the text. By the end of June, 1916, the two companies had merged. All but one of Marguerite Clark's many films were made for one or another of these two companies; all but five are now considered lost. .
