Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book details the groundbreaking experiments conducted by the author in which they successfully hybridized different species of sea urchins. Prior efforts to do the same had led to conflicting theories about the inheritance of traits in offspring. The author's work, however, was groundbreaking in that they were the first to successfully raise these hybrids through complete metamorphosis. In doing so, they were able to control experimental variables including the environment and the selection of parental genetic material. Their findings challenge previous assumptions about the dominance of certain characteristics and provide compelling evidence for the importance of the cytoplasm in determining traits. This book is an essential read for those interested in genetics, embryology, and the history of scientific discovery. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Hardcover. Descend into the depths of enchantment on a spiral staircase of stories by the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Maria Edgeworth, Ouida, the women's suffragist, animal rights activist, and socialist Mary de Morgan, and more! In this circa 1918 collection, bound in cloth the color of pumpkin spice and bearing a witch whisking away a slumbering child on its cover, you'll encounter a girl who marries a skull, magic candles that summon fairies good or bad based on one's intentions, enchanted streams guarded by fearsome dragons, and a princess who escapes the unbearable politeness of the court when a witch places an automaton in her stead, as well as timeless tales from Celtic, Norse, Italian, West African, Russian, Japanese, Greek, and Arthurian folklore. This "staircase of stories" is arranged by ascending complexity for growing readers from ages 4 to 14 and beyond, bountifully illustrated in a color frontispiece by Minnie Dibdin Spooner, 30 colored plates, and 41 black and white plates (4 of which have been colored in rather well by a previous reader) by such artists as Cecile Walton, Katharine Cameron, Olive Allen, Evelyn Beale, Cecil Aldin, and the great Walter Crane. 9 1/4" X 6 3/4". viii, [iv], 521pp. Presents nicely in protective archival jacket. Bound in deep orange cloth over boards, with color pictorial plate of M. D. Spooner's rendering of the witch and princess from Mary de Morgan's "The Toy Princess" to upper board, lettered in black to upper board and spine, with small vignettes of owls and staircase stamped in black. Moderate wear to binding, with rubbing, bumping, and small tears to corners and head and tail of spine, as well as faint scattered scratching and soiling to cloth. Substantial foxing to edges of text block and preliminaries, with scattered foxing to pages throughout and small neat tear to margin of pages 25-26. Bookseller's ticket of J. J. Banks & Son of Imperial Library, Cheltenham to front pastedown. Toning to endpapers. Binding is sound. Fully illustrated throughout in 31 color plates and 41 black and white plates, with black and white plates facing pages 235, 286, 509, and 514 colored in rather well by a previous owner. Christmas card, signed Maude, and drawing of sailboats laid in.…

Hardcover. Condizione: Very good. First Trade Edition. First Trade Edition. Hardcover. In this second collection of fairy tales by Mary De Morgan, a wicked princess who doesn't want to marry practices black magic and strings her suitors into beads on her beautiful necklace, elves transform a courageous busker into a golden harp when she breaks their curse over a town, an evil fairy steals a princess's heart, a peddlar, a donkey, a raven, and a sparrow make empty promises to each other only to be scammed by the justice system, a baker makes a deal with an imp to produce perfect, plentiful loaves that'll make him rich but everyone who eats them absolutely miserable, three kings run away to learn traditional trades and live happily ever after, and a wise princess who can talk to animals and turn enemies to stone searches for an answer to the question of how to be happy. This is a very presentable first trade edition, issued simultaneously with a limited edition, of this collection of original fairy tales by a remarkable woman in the history and development of fairy tales, "the most popular and best loved of her books," according to Roger Lancelyn Green (1918-1987), in the original decorated publisher's cloth binding featuring symbols from her stories, beautifully illustrated throughout in a frontispiece, 10 plates, and themed headings, initials, and tailpieces by the great Walter Crane. This collection of seven spellbinding fairy tales is the work of the English writer Mary De Morgan (1850-1907), a women's suffragist, animal rights activist, and socialist whose politics informed her remarkable fairy tales, known for their feminism, criticism of mass production, and deviations from the traditional "happily ever afters" of the form, all on grand display in this collection. Mary De Morgan was the daughter of the mathematician Augustus De Morgan and the spiritualist, suffragist, and tutor to Ada Lovelace Sophia De Morgan; she was also the sister of novelist and ceramicist William De Morgan and sister-in-law to pre-Raphaelite painter Evelyn De Morgan. These influences, along with that of artist and radical socialist William Morris and his family, to whom she was a dear friend, were important ones in her work, both social and creative. The Necklace of Princess Fiorimonde and Other Stories collects the following fairy tales: "The Necklace of Princess Fiorimonde," "The Wanderings of Arasmon," "The Heart of Princess Joan," "The Peddlar's Pack," "The Bread of Discontent," "The Three Clever Kings," and "The Wise Princess." 7" X 5 3/8". vii, 184pp. Bound in gray-green cloth over boards, designed by Walter Crane and decorated in black to both boards and spine with circular vignettes representing each story inside, gilt strung beads representing the title story to upper board, lettered in black and gilt to upper board and spine. Moderate wear to binding, with corners turned in, bumping to head and tail of spine, dimming to sunned spine, slight bowing to boards, light soiling to cloth, bubble to cloth under the 'I' in "Illustrated," and slight lean to spine. All edges gilt. Patterned endpapers in the Arts and Crafts Movement style. Burn & Co. binder's ticket to rear pastedown. Tears along inner hinges, carefully reinforced with archival adhesive, some gatherings uneven, and hint of spine at page 128; binding remains sound. Pencilled checkmarks to list of illustrations. Foxing to prelminaries; occasional smudge or stray spot of foxing to pages, with faint stain to margin of plates facing page 44 and 170, else unmarked. Illustrated in 11 plates and in headings, initials, and tailpieces by Crane.…
