Aggiungi al carrelloThird printing (per publisher's requisite statement upon copyright page; originally published September 1938). 96 pages. Staple-bound paperback: H 27.75cm x L 21.25cm. Brown paper covers with light creasing/curling to their bottom fore-edge corners; pictorial front cover; spine ends scuffed/nicked; a few small stains to rear cov…er. Slight foxing to text block edges. Light to mild wrinkling to interior leaves with some faint staining; mild soiling and foxing to first and last leaves; pages 95/96 have small stain at their upper fore-edge margins. With frontispiece and Introduction (pages 11-12) by Stanley Clisby Arthur. Features forty-one monochrome plates (including frontis) by Delcroix as well as an unattributed portrait photograph of Delcroix on page thirteen. The plates, each on rectos, show various Vieux Carre streetscapes, courtyards, buildings, etc., with their titles and brief explanatory captions on their opposing versos. Although his emphasis upon soft focus and shadow was similar to Arnold Genthe and the early work of Clarence John Laughlin, Delcroix's style remains wonderfully distinctive. However, despite his prominence, PATIOS, STAIRWAYS AND IRON-LACE BALCONIES remains the only publication specifically showcasing Delcroix's work. Description copyright David Hallinan, Bookseller.

Aggiungi al carrelloOriginal Eugene A. Delcroix color image under glass. Original Delcroix studio muted gilt frame: approx. H 6.5 inches x L 5 inches (H 16.5cm x L 12.7cm). Visible image area: approx. H 5 inches x L 3.5 inches (approx. H 12.6cm x L 8.7cm). Image foreground of dimly lit interior vestibule with ajar right door of an iron gate leading… to a sunlit exterior courtyard with several hand-colored compositional elements; Delcroix's two-line pencil-signed inscription "Delcroix | N.O. LA" written at image's bottom right. Original age-toned brown backing paper has some tearing but mostly intact with title and studio stock number "The Spanish Court. | #2017." handwritten in Delcroix's elegant black ink script near top center; $1.25 price in pencil at top left. Metal loop wall hanger present as well. Image has not been examined outside of the frame. With his stylistically unique images of the French Quarter and local environs, Eugene Delcroix is regarded as among the best of all photographers who practiced their craft in New Orleans, an illustrious group which includes Arnold Genthe, Joseph Woodson "Pops" Whitsell, and Clarence John Laughlin. After apprenticing with Anthony H. Hitchler and C. Bennette Moore, Delcroix operated his own studio from the 1930s to the 1960s. Although quite prolific with contract work for local government publications as well as studio and yearbook portraiture, Delcroix is best known as a pictorialist photographer as he successfully catered to the tourist market with carefully composed images deftly combining light, shadow, and soft focus in order to imbue a romantic haziness to his glass plate negatives thereafter using careful exposure times and soft color pastel tinting in the darkroom to enhance the final print's nostalgic and mysterious aura. Description copyright David Hallinan, Bookseller.

Aggiungi al carrelloOriginal Eugene A. Delcroix color image on a porcelain tile. Image dimensions within frame approximately H 10.5cm x L 7.75cm (approx. H 4 1/8 inches x L 3 inches). Original Delcroix studio muted gilt frame H 18cm x L 15.25cm (H 7 1/16 inches x L 5 15/16 inches). Image foreground of interior vestibule and shadow-laden right side…of tall vase and base of staircase with mildly sunlit left side retreating to background of arched gated doorway which leads to an exterior patio; Delcroix's standard two-line signed inscription "E. Delcroix | N.O. LA" at bottom center. Original brown backing paper completely intact with title and inventory/print number "Interior, Patio Royal | #1974" at top followed by "Porcelain" at bottom all handwritten by Delcroix in black ink. Standard studio metal wire hanger present as well. Porcelain tile has not been examined outside of the frame. These Delcroix tile images are quite uncommon in comparison to his standard photo prints. Aggiungi al carrelloOriginal Eugene A. Delcroix photograph with hand-tinted color in an original Delcroix studio gilt frame; faintly hand-signed in pencil "E. Delcroix | N.O. LA" within the image at lower right corner. Undated as usual but circa 1930-1950. Frame: approx. H 16.5cm x L 12.5cm (H 6 1/2 inches x L 4 15/16 inches). Visible image area: a…pprox. H 12.5cm x L 8.75cm (H 5" x L 3.5"). Image shows a sunlit New Orleans' Vieux Carre courtyard with large vase at lower left and foreground shadows with close background of an arched entryway to a recessed staircase and various plants along a red brick wall with green doors and window shutters. Original backing paper on rear of frame completely intact; Delcroix's two-line handwritten ink inscription "Old Brulatour Patio | #2060" with former as title and latter likely being a studio stock number; lacks the original wire hanger and two screws at right and left edges which were removed in favor of brass hanging tab at center top. Photograph has not been examined outside of the frame; frame has a few slender surface scuffs to gilt but otherwise fine condition and the photo certainly appears to be fine as well. A black/white image of the Brulatour patio-courtyard (located at 520 Royal Street in the Vieux Carre) from the same perspective appears under the title of "Patio of Maison Seignouret" on page 17 of Delcroix's 1938 book PATIOS, STAIRWAYS AND IRON - LACE BALCONIES OF OLD NEW ORLEANS. With his stylistically unique pictorialist images of the French Quarter and local environs, Eugene Delcroix is regarded as among the best of all photographers who practiced their craft in New Orleans, an illustrious group which includes Arnold Genthe, Joseph Woodson "Pops" Whitsell, Clarence John Laughlin, and C. Aggiungi al carrelloOriginal Eugene A. Delcroix photograph with hand-tinted color in an original Delcroix gilt studio frame with subtle color inlay; Delcroix's signature is in the lower right corner but appears to have reproduced from the negative rather than actually being hand-signed on the image itself. Frame's backing paper torn with some small… losses affecting some letters of the handwritten title (but easily extrapolated) - two-line inscription is "The Spanish Court. | #2017." with the latter being a studio stock number. Frame: approx. H 24cm x L 19cm. Image: approx. H 16.5cm x L 11.25cm. Photograph has not been examined outside of the frame.
