"72 chromolithographed or pochoir colored plates (8 x 5 in.; 20.3 x 12.7 cm), many heightened with gum arabic, the plates glued dos-à-dos and strung four across by means of ribbon to form 9 "leaves," featuring varieties of fruit (apples, pears, peaches, plums, grapes, strawberries, blackberries,… raspberries), shrubs, and roses and flowering plants; some losses to the "Mrs. J. H. Laing" rose plate, tear in left margin of "Winter Banana Apple" plate and offsetting to "Irish Juniper" plate, a few plates thumbed or creased. Tipped into a black morocco folding wallet (8 3/4 x 5 1/2 in.; 22.2 x 14 cm), metal clasp; lightly rubbed. (64F20F) "AN INNOVATION IN AMERICAN ART" (Ravenswaay, p. 20). A travelling salesman's custom sample catalogue assembled from stock plates. In the latter half of the 19th century, Rochester, New York, was a leading American nursery center. Auxiliary businesses developed, one of which was the production of colored fruit and flower prints to promote sales for nurserymen and their travelling representatives. A nursery firm or salesman could purchase plates "individually, as bound assortments, or as collections in portfolios. If he wished he could select an assortment illustrating the stock he was selling and have it bound The earlier plates were either hand-colored lithographs or a variation of the theorem technique of using stencils with details added freehand. All these plates were bright and colorful. Some had simplified designs which were almost abstract in quality" (Kabelac, pp. 93-94). Dewey was a Rochester bookseller and publisher who recognized the wider appeal of the nurseryman colorplate business in the late 1850s. By the mid-1870s, his business was flourishing: he had over 30 artists and other employees engaged in producing between one and two hundred thousand plates of some 2,400 varieties of fruit, flowers, shrubs, and trees (Kabelac, p. 97). In the spring of 1888, Dewey consolidated his Fruit Plate and Nursery Supplies business with the Rochester Lithographing and Printing Company, "confident that with his stock and designs and their expertise in chromolithography they would produce 'a greater variety and better plates'" (Kabelac, p. 97). "As Rochester's gardening flourished a local bookseller with an interest in the subject, D.M. Dewey, began to collect and publish coloured plates of fruit, flowers, shrubs, and fruit-bearing or purely ornamental trees. Selections of these plates sold by Dewey and others from the 1850s to the last decade of the century were usually bound into pocket-sized books about ten by six inches with stout leather covers, often stamped with the name of the nursery or the salesman offering the plants portrayed within. Dewey also recognised the wider appeal of the coloured plates described by Charles van Ravenswaay as 'an innovation in American popular art' ("A Nineteenth-Century Garden", 1977, page 20.). Their polychromic attractions were extended to a larger audience in small selections from a larger-sized series presented in decorative bindings, . the earliest plates were simple watercolours, but later, as the demand grew, the technique of theorem paintings coloured with the help of stencils was used to multiply the number of copies as quickly and as cheaply as possible. Later still engraved or lithographed outlines were coloured by hand, and finally chromolithographs printed in colour began to replace more laborious procedures, though some of these were finished by hand too. Most of these processes involved the labour of teams of artists and colourists, one or two of whom went on to establish themselves as rivals to Dewey, though none achieved the same success" (Oak Spring Pomona 64).

Starting in the late 1850s Dewey produced brightly colored illustrations of fruits, flowers, and ornamental trees to be used by traveling sales representatives from the nursery to market their products to consumers. By the 1870s Dewey had produced so many images , he began compiling portfolios and custom plate books and portfolios for customers.
