The classical tradition in Spain began long ago and was of especial importance during Spain's Siglo d'Oro. The influence of ancient Greece on Spain and its art, lit-erature and scholarship has been marked for centuries and the interrelationships of the two countries is worthy of study. For several centuries Spanish writers have been translating and interpreting Greek authors and commenting upon Greek life and thought. Though valu-able works, they are seldom included in bibliographies because they have never before been collected into a single vol-ume. This is the first comprehensive bib-liography of works by Spanish and Latin American authors on ancient, media-eval and modern Greek studies. For the first time these works of primary im-portance which have been unknown or scattered have been collected, including Spanish editions and translations of classical and Byzantine authors, and stud-ies on philologhy, political and cultural history, economics, geography, law, numismatics, art, archaeology, mythol-ogy and religion, philosophy and science and reference works and scholarly journals. The introduction by the late Profes-sor D'Olwer has been printed in Spanish and English for the benefit of scholars of both tongues. JAMES KLEON DEMETRIUS has stud-ied at the University of Iowa, North Dakota University, New York Univer-sity and Brooklyn College. His graduate work was done at Columbia Univer-sity. He has taught for eighteen years at the high school, preparatory school and college levels, most recently at Iona College, Pennsylvania Military College and Washington College. His courses have included Spanish language and lit-erature, ancient Greek, Greek history, philosophy and literature as well as edu-cation, logic and public speaking. Professor Demetrius is a member of nine professional societies, among them the Medieval Academy, the Classical Association of England, Association In-ternacional de Hispanistas and the Amer-ican Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. He has written exten-sively, having had articles published in a variety of scholarly reviews and jour-nals. He has also written several books and monographs, and is currently work-ing on a Spanish textbook. Published to date are An Essay on Greek Influ-ences on Spanish Literature, A Bibliog-raphy of Greek Studies in Spain and Los Griegos en España. Four other books are expected in the near future. The author has travelled widely in Greece, Spain, Mexico and Italy. His major interest is tracing the impact of Greek thought on other civilizations, whether ancient or modern.
