I have researched Gibraltar for many years and I was given the opportunity of writing a book on Hong Kong. I called this "The Guns and Gunners of Hong Kong". My reason for putting together the guns and those who manned them was because so many of these histories concentrate on the fortifications and the armament and leave out the human aspect altogether. Beside which, I am a Gunner. This book is the story of the Guns and Gunners of Malta during the British period. So that the story of the guns can be told in full the book takes into account other arms and services which provided ele ments of artillery related defence systems and therefore includes ref erence to the Royal Engineers with their se.
