This book focuses on Shiraz and the province of Fars to provide a detailed political, social and economic history of Ilkhanid rule from the first Mongol invasions in 1220 until the end of the Injuid Dynasty in 1357. Using a vast collection of sources, Denise Aigle combines local and global approaches to integrate the history of the province into the whole administrative system. Central is the thesis that Mongol rule caused a break in traditional administrative patterns. A dual administrative system was set up, consisting of both Mongol and local Persian personnel, directed from the court. Charting the fortunes of each successive ruler, her research shows that the failings of individual rulers, as well as intriguing by Persian notables, were the principal reasons for Shiraz and Fars's economic decline under the Mongols in comparison with the more successful neighbouring province of Kirman. Iran Under the Mongols is a vital contribution to our understanding of the effects of Mongol rule in Iran.

En fait cette domination ne s'est pas exercée de manière identique sur l'ensemble du territoire. Pour des raisons d'ordre écologique, les tribus mongoles se sont établies au Khorassan et en Azerbaïdjan où les Ilkhans ont installé leur cour, l'Ordo. Dans le sud, le Fars fut du point de vue ethnique et culturel mieux préservé, si bien qu'il a pu conserver sa capitale, Chiraz, ainsi que sa cohésion islamique. Par ailleurs, même si l'incorporation des différentes régions iraniennes à l'«ulus» de Hülegü les soumettait à un régime administratif et fiscal commun, il subsistait des particularismes dans son application. Cette recherche examine les modalités de la domination ilkhanide sur le Fars depuis le début de l'apparition des troupes mongoles, en Iran oriental, jusqu'à la fin des deux décennies qui ont suivi le démembrement de l'Empire après la mort d'Abu Sa'id, en 1335. Qui veut comprendre ce qui se passe dans les régions, doit nécessairement porter une attention particulière à la cour des Ilkhans parce que c'est là, sous la tente, que tout se décide. Il faut démêler l'écheveau des rapports compliqués entre les différents acteurs, tant au niveau local qu'à celui de l'Ordo.
