Wenn ich mich zurückerinnere, dann sehe ich deutlich, wie jede vorangegangene Auflage die jeweils zu ihrer Zeit gegenwärtigen technischen Kenntnisse und Entwicklungsrichtungen bei der Konstruktion von Lautsprechersystemen wiedergaben. Die erste und zweite Auflage, die ich in 1977 und 1978 selbst herausgegeben habe, wurden noch im Offset-Druckverfahren mit Spiralbindung produziert. Es war die erste Veröffentlichung, in der ein Autor alle Techniken der Konstruktion von Lautsprechergehäusen mit Hilfe der Tiele/Small Parameter mit Informationen über die praktischen Eigenschaften von Frequenzweichen und deren Konstruktion kombinierte. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt waren vermutlich nicht sehr viele Konstrukteure mit dem Einsatz von komplex-konjugierten Elementen (Zobel-Glieder) und LCR-Schaltungen zur Linearisierung des Impedanzverhaltens der Lautsprecherchassis vertraut. Es war im Jahr 1986, als mir Ed Dell vorschlug, einen Nachdruck der zweiten Auflage herauszugeben. Ich überdachte die Sache, entschied, daß dies nicht der richtige Weg sei, und schrieb das gesamte Buch mit deutlich vergrößertem Umfang neu. Mit Unterstützung der Profis von Audio Amateur Press produzierten wir ein erstklassiges Buch mit einer Vielzahl neuer Informationen, umfassenden Literaturverweisen, und einem ansprechenden Umschlag. Wir waren sehr zufrieden mit dem Ergebnis, und auch Leser bestätigten das, indem sie Buch zu ihrer "Lautsprecherbibel" machten - zumindest wurde mir davon berichtet. Mit dem Erscheinen leistungsfähiger Software zur Simulation von Lautsprechersystemen zu Beginn der neunziger Jahre (um genau zu sein, mit dem Programm LEAP v4.0 von LinearX), wurde mir eine sehr viel umfassendere Modellierung und Beschreibung der Konstruktion von Lautsprechersystemen möglich, was mich dazu veranlaßte, eine wiederum stark erweiterte vierte Auflage des Buches zu schreiben. Diese sehr populäre Ausgabe wurde inzwischen in deutsche, portugiesische und chinesische Sprache übersetzt. Die aktuelle Auflage befaßt sich zusätzlich mit den gegenwärtigen Trends zu Heim-Kino Anlagen, und fortschrittlichen Car-Audio Systemen. Diese beiden Bereiche sind mittlerweile so bedeutsam Teilgebiete der Lautsprecherkonstruktion geworden, und weisen so viele anwendungsspezifische Details auf, daß jedem Bereich ein eigenes Kapitel gewidmet wurde. Mit dem Einstieg in das Zeitalter der Informations-Autobahnen werden gut konstruierte Lautsprecher nicht nur ein Teil hochwertiger Stereoanlagen bleiben, sondern ebenso zu wesentlichen Bestandteilen des Heim-Kinos und der Multimedia-Wiedergabe der Computer werden. Auch nach neunzehn Jahren bleibt das Bestreben zur Konstruktion immer besserer Wiedergabesysteme, sei es durch Amateure oder Profis, noch immer für viele von uns eine Leidenschaft.
