Richter, who was born and who had studied in Dresden himself, had been familiar with the works by the Dresden artist Friedrich since the 1950's. How-ever, he first saw the painting's original that was long known under the title The Wreck of Hope, for the first time in 1968. At this time, he had a deputy professorship for the painter Paul Wunderlich at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Hamburg. Since 1905, Friedrich's painting has been a part of the Hamburger Kunsthalle's collection. Friedrich was inspired for this motive by a Greenland expedition conducted by William Edward Parry in 1819/1820. Friedrich reinterpreted the dangerous search for the famous Northwest passage for navigation into a scene of failure. In an unrealistic snow-covered landscape, Parry's stranded ship, the Griper, is smashed by huge ice floes. By art history Friedrich's land-scapes, such as this painting, have been read as symbols for the not fulfilled hopes for a liberalization as well as for the granting of civil rights and freedom of the press in Germany after the wars of liberation of 1812/1813. On Feburary 9th 1972, Gerhard Richter turned 40. In the pre-vious year, the Düsseldorf Kunstakademie had appointed him a professorship for painting. Since June 114, 1972, he had been representing the Federal Republic of Germany at the Biennial in Venice as the only German artist. Richter's artistic career had reached its first peak. Richter booked a ten-day package tour to Greenland, which led him via Copenhagen to Gothab by plane, then by helicopter and finally on board a ship into the Arctic Ocean. It should not explicitly be a vacation. He thankfully rejected Hanne Darboven's offer to travel together and went by himself instead. Right from the beginning, he emphasized the professional character of his adventure: »I wanted to take pictures, such as the The Wreck of Hope by Caspar David Friedrich. The whole thing was a project.« Richter understood Friedrich's paintings as parables to his private situation. His relationship was in a crisis and he struggled with his roles as husband and father. »The project was also an alibi to go there, giving the trip a purpose. Marriage went through a crisis. And going into the ice can also be a longing for a place where you will feel safe. No life, only ice, « Richter vividly recalled his emotional state even 30 years later. --- Full refund if you are not entirely pleased with your purchase. Combined shipping available at cost.
