Motive wie Katastrophe oder Kleinbürgertum bieten nur die erste Möglichkeit, um von einem Gegenstand zu einem Zustand zu kommen; dieser Zustand kann eine Art Leerstelle bedeuten, die genau den Raum bietet, in dem der Inhalt des Bildes nicht unserer sogenannten Gegenstandswelt folgt, sondern einen eigenen Bedeutungskanon entwickelt. Von Interesse ist für Dirk Skreber nicht die Darstellung einer spezifischen Realitätsform, sondern vielmehr sucht er nach den Möglichkeiten einer Dekonstruktion dieser Formen bei einer gleichzeitigen Wahrung eines bewussten Umgangs mit ihnen. Dies geschieht zugunsten einer neuen Realität, deren Rahmenbedingungen sich jedoch nicht so leicht abstecken lassen. Ihre Daseinsform scheint eine des Sich-Entziehens zu sein, und im Moment ihres Erscheinens ist sie bereits wieder verschwunden. Sie ist nicht eindeutig, aber auch nicht zwiespältig, denn dafür erscheint sie zu nüchtern, zu distanziert. In Skrebers Bildern begegnen wir einer nicht gesicherten Situation, einem nicht gesicherten Ort. Diese Situationen präsentieren keine eindeutigen Erscheinungsformen, sondern bedeuten eine ästhetische Kategorie, deren Identität unter Verwendung sicherer Wertmaßstabe - wie Katastrophe, Kleinbiirgertum, Erinnerungen, etc. - eine bedrohliche, weil nicht einschätzbare Atmosphäre schafft.
