Die Beiträge zeigen, wie stark die Photovoltaik damals noch als materialgetriebene Technologie verstanden wurde und wie die Electrochemical Society versuchte, Forschung, Industrie und neue Fertigungstechniken zusammenzuführen. Mit alledem handelt es sich um einen der international einflussreichsten Tagungsbände zur Herstellungstechnologie von Solarzellen aus den 1980er-Jahren. Er dokumentiert den weltweiten Übergang der Photovoltaik von der Weltraumtechnologie zur terrestrischen Massenproduktion. Dabei war das Jahr 1984/1985 ein technologischer Wendepunkt. Bis dahin waren Solarzellen extrem teuer, da sie mit Verfahren aus der Halbleiterindustrie für Satelliten gefertigt wurden. Dieses Symposium konzentrierte sich auf neue, kostengünstige Materialien und großtechnische Prozesse (New Processing Technologies). Im Fokus standen neuartige, günstige Verfahren zur Herstellung von polykristallinem Silizium sowie das Ziehen von Siliziumbändern (Ribbon Silicon), um den teuren Materialverlust beim Zersägen von Blöcken zu umgehen. Zugleich enthält der Band Pionierarbeiten zu amorphen Silizium-Solarzellen (a-Si) sowie zu aufkommenden Verbindungshalbleitern wie Cadmiumtellurid (CdTe) und Kupfer-Indium-Diselenid (CIS). Insbesondere der Herausgeber Vijay K. Kapur war ein Pionier bei der Erforschung von CIS-Dünnschichtzellen. Da schließlich die Konferenz von der Electrochemical Society ausgerichtet wurde, lag ein starker Schwerpunkt auf der galvanischen Abscheidung (Electrodeposition) und elektrochemischen Reinigungsmethoden für Halbleitermaterialien, um die Produktionskosten drastisch zu senken. Kapur war in den 1980er Jahren in der amerikanischen PV-Materialforschung aktiv, insbesondere im Bereich Silizium-Reinheit, Wafer-Herstellung und neuen Beschichtungsverfahren. Seine Rolle als Herausgeber entspricht der typischen Struktur der ECS-Symposien: ein Fachforscher, der die Beiträge bündelt und die thematische Linie vorgibt. Dismukes war ein profilierter Materialforscher im Umfeld der Photovoltaik und Halbleitertechnik. Er publizierte zu Dünnschichtprozessen, chemischen Abscheideverfahren und neuen PV-Materialien. Seine Herausgeberschaft zeigt, dass das Symposium stark auf die Prozesstechnik fokussiert war.
