Simpson is widely regarded as one of the leading Scottish medievalists of his generation, and…the affection in which he is held is second to none. A Festschrift is traditionally a collection of essays on varied and not always related topics. This one is quite different, concentrating on developments and directions in Scottish medieval and early modern history (to c. 1603) during Grant Simpson's career. This is especially relevant since Grant Simpson is associated with a distinguished group of scholars whose work during this period ensured that Scottish history not only survived as a discipline but began to claim parity of status with the history of any other small country. Grant Simpson's contribution to Scottish history is to its future just as much as its past: nearly everyone asked to contribute to this volume is substantially younger than he is. The majority have been his students or were examined by him. Among the first cohort of undergraduates he encountered at Aberdeen was one of the contributors to this volume, Michael Lynch. Five of the twelve Aberdeen postgraduates he supervised are contributors: Alexander Stevenson (on Bruges), Cynthia Neville (on the earldom of Strathearn), Sonja Cameron (on Sir James Douglas), Alastair Macdonald (on warring nobles), and Jane Thomas (on the craftsmen of Elgin).".
