Ich habe teils miterlebt und erinnere mich gut, wie viele Varianten mein Vater ? Landgraf Philipp von Hessen ? ausprobiert hat. bis er jedem Stück im Schloss seinen Platz gegeben hatte. Versuche etwas umzugestalten werden meist bestraft, da die Wegnahme oder Hinzufügung eines Objektes schnell die Harmonie zerstört, die hier in den fünfziger und sechziger Jahren des letzten Jahrhunderts geschaffen wurde. Gesichtspunkte der Kunstgeschichte flossen in die Überlegungen meines Vaters genauso ein wie die Geschichte meiner Familie und das sichere Empfinden für die Korrektheit von historischen Raumdekorationen. Wenn wir dennoch für die Dauer einer Sommersaison Dinge aus den Schlossräumen im .Badehaus" zu einer Sonderausstellung zusammentragen, geschieht dieses aus dem wohl-überlegten Wunsch, für eine begrenzte Zeit einen anderen Blick auf eine spezielle Objektgruppe zu ermöglichen. Oft ergeben sich erst durch die direkte Gegenüberstellung verwandter Kunstwerke reizvolle Vergleiche, und lassen sich Entwicklungen in der Kunstgeschichte nachvollziehen. Beim Thema Uhren stand uns eine große Auswahl von Objekten zur Verfügung. von denen die meisten in Schloss Fasanerie oder in einem anderen Schloss der Stiftung in ein harmonisches Raumgefüge eingebunden sind. Vor diesem Hintergrund wollte es nicht unser Ziel sein, jede Uhr zu zeigen. die sich in unserer Sammlung befindet. Es galt eine Auswahl zu treffen. die trotz der Konzentration auf das Thema Uhr. jedem Exponat etwas von seinem singulären Stellenwert lässt. Die Präsentation von möglichst vielen Beispielen eines einzelnen Uhrentypus. mag den darauf spezialisierten Museen vorbehalten bleiben. deren Schwerpunkt mehr in der Veranschaulichung von technischen Entwicklungen in der Uhrmacherei liegt. Versteht man die Uhr als einen Teil der Raumdekoration, als ein besonderes Stück des Meublements, so ist sie gewiss ein Objekt, das zu Recht einen hei orgehobenen Stellenwert für sich beansprucht. Neben der Vielzahl allegorischer Verknüpfungen, welche die Uhren in ihrer Geschichte begleitet haben ? sie werden als Sinnbild für den Lauf der Zeit und als Analogon für das Funktionieren der Welt verstanden ?, ist die Uhr zunächst ein sehr dekoratives Objekt im Raum, das ihm Leben und Bewegung gibt. Insbesondere die Pendule des 18. Jahrhunderts ist viel mehr als nur das Gehäuse für eine Mechanik, welche die Zeit anzeigt. Sie ist oft eine Skulptur von feinster Bronzearbeit. in deren Komposition an harmonischer und manchmal sehr phantasievoller Stelle das Rund des gutes Exemplar, ordentlich * Verlag: Petersberg : Imhof * Bindung: broschiert.
