Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Illustrated Edition. Finely bound in dark brown crushed morocco, stamped with gilt floral decorations, wide floral gilt turn-ins with complimentary floral end papers, top edge gilt, ribbon marker, the binding unsigned making it likely an example of late 19th c. American fine binding. The Preface by Austin Dobson, which first appeared in the "English Illustrated Magazine" for October 1890, traces the history of illustrated editions of The Vicar, although this edition makes no mention of its illustrators. The illustrations are, however, signed in the images and are mainly dated '89 and '90. Fine, prior owner name front end paper. A lovely little book in fine contemporary binding.

Numerous Hugh Thomson illustrations throughout, including frontispiece. (illustratore). Second edition, eighth printing. xxxiv, [2 ads], 305, [1]. 7.5" x 5" STUNNING SENTIMENTALISM Goldsmith's morally upright Charles Primrose and humble exploration of village life, as well as satirical critique of the British gentry's hypocrisy, secured his 1766 novel's place as a cornerstone in English sentimental literature, as writers like Dickens, Austen, and Shelley mentioned characters from the Vicar of Wakefield in their own books. Macmillan and Co. republished the story in 1890 with illustrations by Hugh Thomson and a preface by Austin Dobson, eventually running reprints of the second edition, resulting in this seventh reprint in 1922. Beautifully bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffeone of the most famed binderies of the twentieth-century, known for their luxury bindings and as the preferred bindery that crafted the miniature books for Queen Mary's Dolls' House (1924). This copy features ornate basket-weave calf, stunning marbled endpapers, bright gilt, and an exceedingly clean interior. Very slight lean, tiny spots of wear spine tips and joints, else fine. Overall an extremely clean, brightly gilt copy. Bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in full blue basket-weave calf, gilt ruled, brown morocco spine labels with ornate gilt, aeg, dentelles, marbled endpapers.
