Unusually versatile for his time, he was trained both as a common lawyer at the Middle Temple and as a civilian, holding a Doctor of Civil Law (D.C.L.) from Cambridge. Sir William Holdsworth held Doddridge in exceptionally high esteem, noting his rigorous archival scholarship and foundational contributions to early modern legal history. Originally composed during the early reign of King James I, The History drew directly upon primary administrative manuscripts and rolls housed in the Tower of London. Doddridge undertook this exhaustive research to argue for the formal administrative revival of Wales as a distinct principality.
